92 Chapter 92 Kindness In The Rain
Blanche’s POV 1
I couldn’t even recall how I’d made it back to my room, or how I’d ended up collapsed on the couch.
I lay curled on my side in the murky room, staring at nothing, my thoughts completely empty.
I had no clue how long I’d been there when Carry finally returned.
“Mom?” Carry’s voice drifted through the shadows as she entered the darkened room.
I snapped back to reality and responded distantly, “I’m here.”
She followed my voice and settled beside me on the couch.
“Mom, how’s Grandma doing these days?” Carry asked out of nowhere.
The mention of Irene made my mood sour instantly.
I figured Carry must’ve overheard Joanna talking about my mother earlier-that had to be why she was asking.
My response came out icy. “She’s fine.”
Carry shifted closer, pressing her head against my shoulder. “Mom, I want to visit Grandma.”
I wasn’t sure what she was getting at, but I wasn’t having it.
I shut her down without hesitation. “No way. You’ve got preschool. School’s your priority.”
Carry paused, then tried again. “What about during winter break? I’ll come with you to the Callum Mansion to see Grandma, and we can
celebrate Christmas there.”
Christmas? If that actually happened, Mom would be thrilled beyond belief.
But Carry had never gotten along with anyone from the Callum Family. If she showed up, the Callum Mansion would be chaos.
I didn’t flat-out refuse. Instead, I said, “We’ll talk about it when the time comes.”
Kids were fickle anyway.
Carry might want to go now, but by winter break, she’d probably change her tune completely.
Plus, Joanna was the person Carry loved most.
Carry was getting sleepy, so she nestled into my arms. She grabbed my finger and asked, “Mom, does Grandma cook good food?”
The question caught me off guard, dragging my mind back to Carry’s last visit to the Callum Mansion.
Irene had prepared everything by hand that evening, but Carry had rejected the meal without even trying it.
Just thinking about it now made my chest tighten painfully. I couldn’t bring myself to answer, so I avoided it. “Time for bed. I’m

exhausted.”
Carry didn’t push. She sat up from my embrace and said, “Goodnight, Mom.”
“Goodnight,” I murmured back.
Carry climbed into bed and fell asleep almost instantly.
I remained wide awake on the couch. The memories from that evening kept crashing over me, and I couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
I barely slept that night. When heavy rain started hammering down late at night, it made rest even more impossible.
By early morning, I was already awake.
I threw on my coat and headed downstairs, only to discover Zain was already there.
I blinked in surprise when I spotted him, but quickly recovered my composure.
Zain was absorbed in his magazine, and when he heard my footsteps on the stairs, he looked up. He rarely bothered with pleasantries,
but he nodded and said, “Morning.”
“Morning,” I replied.
After our brief exchange, I started toward the kitchen to prepare breakfast, but Zain suddenly spoke up. “Don’t worry about it today.
Let’s grab breakfast out.”
I looked mildly surprised, but after considering it, I agreed. “Alright.”
Once I’d accepted, Zain returned to his magazine.
Actually, eating out had been Carry’s idea. She’d mentioned it to Zain last night before going to her room.
When you ate at home constantly, you started craving variety.
Since I wasn’t cooking breakfast, I had nothing to occupy my time. The rain continued pounding outside, showing no signs of letting up.
The autumn rain brought a bitter chill.
But after rain, the air always smelled so much cleaner.
I pulled my coat closer and walked to the entrance. I dragged over a chair and sat down, simply watching the downpour.
The sky remained a dreary gray, and the sound of rain striking the ground was strangely comforting.
Watching the rain cascade like a veil, I started feeling slightly better.
Then my phone buzzed. The ringtone sliced through the quiet, sounding almost jarring.
I glanced at my phone. Amber was calling.

He rejected me outright, not giving me room to argue.
I didn’t take it personally. I simply said, “Then have Heidi pick her up.”
Zain snapped his magazine shut and stood abruptly, towering over me. He stared down at me for a long moment, making no attempt to

hide his anger.
I didn’t flinch. I met his gaze, staring right back at him.
After an extended silence, Zain finally looked away and said, “Do whatever you want.”
With that, he turned and headed upstairs.
I watched him leave, my voice cold. “Fine.”
After waiting a while, I went upstairs to wake Carry.
Once I’d helped Carry get dressed, we headed downstairs together. Zain was already there, dressed and ready.
“Morning, Dad,” Carry called out brightly.
After greeting Carry, Zain looked at me. “It’s pouring outside. Let me drive you both.”
Without looking up at him, I continued helping Carry into her raincoat and replied, “No thanks. I’ll drive myself.”
Zain didn’t respond.
Once Carry was bundled up in her raincoat, I took her hand and started toward the door.
But then Carry tugged on my hand and said, “Mom, it’s raining so hard. Can you carry me?”
I looked down at her and nodded. “Of course.”
I lifted Carry up, hooking the umbrella handle around my neck to keep my hands free. Just as I was about to step outside, Zain reached
over and took the umbrella from me. “Let me hold it.”
Instantly, my eyes filled with tears, threatening to overflow.
