91 Chapter 91 Take Whatever Was Left
Blanche’s POV 1
Zain settled into his chair at the dining table, and Carry cocked her head. “Dad, you’re not staying late at work today?”
“No,” Zain replied.
Carry twirled pasta around her spoon, a dab of sauce sticking to her lip.
She beamed. “Awesome! It’s been forever since we all ate together.”
Zain reached for a napkin, dabbing at her messy face with a soft laugh. “Slow down.”
Carry bobbed her head and shot me a glance.
I picked at my food in silence, keeping my expression neutral.
Carry must have noticed how different things were now. I used to brighten the moment Zain walked through the door.
These days, I didn’t even bother getting up to greet him.
Before, I’d take his jacket and briefcase, lay out his house shoes, and tell him, “Wash up. Food’s almost done.”
Carry looked confused, but she couldn’t piece it together.
She shrugged it off and went back to eating.
Heidi appeared with another plate of pasta and utensils, placing them before Zain. “Mr. Jacob, Mrs. Jacob prepared everything tonight.”
Zain surveyed the spread. Obviously, I’d made it all.
Despite how little time we spent together anymore, he still came home to full meals and comfortable nights.
I was a decent cook. I knew his dislikes and exactly what made his mouth water.
He’d always cleaned his plate.
Everyone in the Jacob family appreciated my cooking.
Not because I was some culinary genius. I just paid attention to what people craved and what they couldn’t stomach.
Tonight felt different, though.
My cooking wasn’t the problem, I just hadn’t made any of Zain’s usual favorites.
Soup, shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, mixed greens.
Four dishes sat before us, but Zain wouldn’t touch any of them. Carry, however, adored the soup and shrimp.
Zain hesitated with his fork, clearly unsure where to start.
I could see him thinking about how much I’d changed.

I used to fill his plate with his preferred dishes before he even picked up his utensils.
Now I just focused on my own meal.
Zain kept stealing looks at me, studying the way my lashes cast shadows as I stared down at my food. My unusual silence seemed to
throw him off.
None of the dishes were his style, but Zain wasn’t one to complain. He managed to finish everything.
When he set his fork down, I was sipping soup. Zain turned to Carry. “What did you do at school today?”
Carry wiped her mouth after finishing her soup. “Ms. Suzanne showed us letters and numbers, plus we went outside to draw fall
pictures.”
“Oh! And she said there’s a nature hike next week. Parents are supposed to come too.”
Carry’s face lit up talking about the trip, looking between Zain and me.
I caught her meaning immediately.
Zain spoke up before I could respond. “Carry, your mom should go with you…”
I hadn’t expected Zain to suggest I attend.
Before he finished, I looked at Carry and cut him off. “Let your dad take you. I’m swamped next week, plus I have that community health
clinic.”
Carry considered this, then gazed hopefully at Zain.
Zain met her eager expression and smiled. “If my schedule’s clear, I’ll come.”
Carry bounced in her seat. “Yes! You can carry me when my legs get tired!”
Zain touched her cheek gently; his smile warm. “Deal.”
I tuned out whatever Carry said after that.
Zain kept glancing my way, trying to read my thoughts.
He was probably wondering, ‘Doesn’t she usually care most about Carry? How can she skip out on something this important?‘
It wasn’t the first time, but Zain still seemed shocked I’d actually do it.
After dinner, I took Carry upstairs for her bath.
Once she was clean and dressed in her pink pajamas, Carry clutched her stuffed bear and looked up at me. “Mom, can I visit Dad?”
“Go ahead,” I said.
Carry’s face broke into a huge grin as she squeezed her bear tighter and skipped out, heading straight for Zain’s room.
I watched her bounce away and forced a hollow smile.
After my shower, I realized I’d forgotten my night routine products.

I remembered leaving some in Zain’s room, so I decided to grab them quickly.
As I approached his door, I was about to push it open when Carry’s cheerful voice drifted out. “Miss Joanna, look! I just got all clean.
What about you? What are you doing?”
Joanna’s voice came through the phone. “My mom’s in the hospital. I just finished visiting her.”
Carry’s tone grew gentle. “Oh no! Mrs. Vins has to get better soon, or you’ll worry too much.”
Joanna responded warmly, “Thanks, Carry.”
I froze at the doorway, my chest tightening with each passing moment. Ice seemed to spread through my veins. Fall had barely started,
but I felt like I’d been plunged into arctic water.
After a beat, I gathered my courage and pushed the door open.
The door swung wide, and Carry whipped around, guilt flashing in her eyes when she saw me. She blinked rapidly. “Mom, I’m just having a meeting with Dad.”
I stared at Carry, my gaze cold and detached.
I’d always taught her never to lie, and she’d always sworn she wouldn’t.
Now the lies rolled off her tongue effortlessly.
The flower I’d nurtured so carefully was still wilting away.
My chest ached, but I was done interfering.
If Zain didn’t care, why should I?
“Fine,” I replied.
Zain sat at his desk with Carry on his lap, video–chatting with Joanna. The second I entered, Carry quickly placed the phone face–down on the desktop.
Zain continued typing at his computer, not acknowledging me.
I didn’t say anything else and went to find my skincare items.
When I opened the dresser drawer, all my products were gone. Instead, there was a completely new skincare set from a brand I’d never tried.
My fingers went rigid on the drawer handle. I gave a bitter smile, shut the drawer, and headed for the door without a word.
I’d forgotten that Blissfield Villa wasn’t mine anymore. Naturally, Zain’s room wouldn’t contain any reminders of me.
Seeing me about to leave silently, Carry called out quickly, “Mom, I’ll come back when I finish my meeting with Dad.”
I heard her and simply said, “Okay.”
I wanted to tell her, ‘You don’t have to come back if you’d rather not!

91 Chapter 91 Take Whatever Was Left
The words never left my mouth.
I quietly shut the door behind me as I left. But soon Carry’s voice carried through, sounding worried. “Miss Joanna, were you crying?”
“No, Carry. I’m fine. Don’t worry,” Joanna answered softly.
Carry spoke up with concern. “You need to rest lots, okay? And tell Mrs. Vins to take care of herself. When she’s well, Dad and I will visit
her. She can cook something delicious for me.”
Joanna’s voice trembled slightly. “If you’re not too picky, my mom will make whatever you want.”
Carry giggled. “I’m not picky! I love everything Mrs. Vins cooks.”
I stood outside the door, hearing every word of their conversation. Each sentence from Carry sliced through me like a blade.
Back at the Callum Mansion, Carry had been so difficult and demanding about food. But with Joanna, she transformed into the perfect
little angel.
I desperately wanted to cry, but no matter how hard I tried, the tears wouldn’t fall.
The daughter I’d nearly died bringing into this world was now here to take whatever was left of me.
