The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 1049

Standing perfectly still, the soft, earnest apology and the heartfelt gratitude from Leilani completely washed away the last traces of Ethan's lingering irritation.

He waved a hand dismissively, letting out a heavy sigh as if exhaling the last bit of the week's crushing stress. When he spoke again, his voice had returned to its normal, steady cadence.

"Forget it. It's in the past. Like I said, the only thing that matters is that you're both standing here in one piece."

He paused, his gaze drifting from Leilani to briefly acknowledge Callahan before asking, "Are you guys done with your statements for the day? Need a lift, or help with anything else?"

"If there's anything you need, just say the word."

"No, we're all set," Leilani replied gently.

Ethan nodded. He let his eyes rest on her face one last time, cementing the fact that she was truly okay into his brain. "Alright, then I'll head out. Call me if you need anything."

He turned on his heel, heading back toward his car.

Watching him walk away, Leilani suddenly called out.

"Ethan, wait!"

He stopped and turned back, raising an eyebrow in question.

Leilani took a small step forward. She noticed that his collar was slightly wrinkled and a thin layer of dust clung to his jacket—obvious signs that he had dropped everything and raced across the city the second he heard she was alive. A pang of warmth and guilt tightened her chest, and she lowered her voice.

"I really am sorry for scaring you."
