Without waiting for their reply, Tamara turned on her heel and strode briskly toward the hallway signs.
Queenie immediately relayed the update. "Target is heading for the accessible restroom in the northeast corner. Sir, that area is a camera blind spot."
"She just ditched her security detail!"
Inside the van, Callahan and Leilani stiffened simultaneously.
"Dammit!"
Callahan's voice cracked like a whip. He leaned into the mic. "Queenie, it's a diversion. She's making a run for it."
"Get in there right now and confirm!"
"All units, lock down every exit! I want eyes on the loading docks and service corridors immediately!"
But they were too late.
Inside the restroom, Tamara shoved the door closed and threw the deadbolt. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
The window had already been pried open. Down in the alley below, a completely unmarked black van idled silently like a ghost, its side door slid open.
A man in a maintenance uniform and a baseball cap reached up, grabbing Tamara's arms. Clumsily, but fueled by adrenaline, she scrambled out the window and tumbled into the back of the van.
The second she was inside, the tires squealed, and the van merged flawlessly into the busy street traffic.
When Queenie finally forced the restroom door open with the help of mall security, she was greeted by an empty room, a wide-open window, and a deserted alleyway.
"Target is gone!"
"She went out the window!" Queenie's voice was tight with frustration and urgency.
The atmosphere inside the surveillance van froze. Callahan's fist clenched so hard his knuckles turned bone-white. He slammed it down on the armrest with a violent thud, his expression darkening into pure murder.
