The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 625

Milford froze. "What do you mean?"

Fitch leaned closer, his voice a seductive whisper. "Go and bring Tamara home tomorrow. Keep the Sloans placated for now. When the time is right, your father will find a way to get you that divorce."

Milford's brow furrowed. "Dad, what are you planning with the Sloans? Why can't we just get the divorce now?"

"That's not for you to ask," Fitch said, patting his shoulder in a way that was anything but reassuring. "All you need to know is, if you want that divorce, you'll do as I say." He paused, lowering his voice. "Otherwise, you can look forward to being tied to Tamara for the rest of your life."

Milford's fingers clenched into a fist, his chest heaving. Tied to Tamara for life? No. The mere thought was suffocating. After a long moment, he took a deep breath and finally relented. "…Fine. I'll go."

Fitch nodded, satisfied. "That's my son. Remember, if you're going to put on a show, you have to go all the way. When you go to the Sloans' tomorrow, act like you care about Tamara. Don't let them get suspicious."

Milford didn't answer. He simply bent down, picked up his book, and walked upstairs. Fitch called after him, "We'll go together tomorrow morning. Remember to bring some gifts! And don't you dare mess this up for me!"

The only response was the sound of a door slamming shut. Fitch shook his head, but as he raised his glass again, a calculating smile touched his lips.

Zadie snorted. "Apologize? I don't think I can handle an apology from the great Sherwood family." Her gaze shot to Milford. "Weren't some people hoping our Tamara would get lost? Now you're putting on a fake show to take her back? Who do you think you're fooling?"

Gloria quickly tried to smooth things over. "Zadie, Milford is young and hot-headed. What he did was wrong, and we promise to discipline him properly."

Zadie glanced at Gloria, her tone still sharp. "Discipline him? Mr. Sherwood here seems to have quite the temper himself, willing to lay hands on his own wife and child. Does he really need anyone else to discipline him? Besides, shouldn't the one who started all this be the one to speak up? What's the point of having his parents stand in front of him like a shield?" Zadie's pointed gaze landed squarely on Milford.

A vein throbbed in Milford's temple as he fought to control his anger. "Zadie, I was wrong. I apologize to you and to Tamara."
