His sharp gaze swept over the battered team. When he spoke, his voice wasn't rushed, but it carried an undeniable, anchoring authority.
"Abel, get the perimeter team on the radio. Initiate a full lockdown of this grid. Tell them to rip this building apart down to the studs. I want every inch swept for anything they might have left behind. Do not miss a single detail."
His eyes finally settled on Leilani. His tone deepened, carrying a lethal, unshakable vow.
"He got lucky tonight. He survived on a fluke. But next time..."
"There won't be a next time."
"We are keeping score, and I'm coming to collect."
The sheer predatory intent rolling off Callahan energized the room. The entire team had been dragged through hell and toyed with all night, and they were universally pissed off. Silently, every man swore that if they crossed paths with the phantom again, they would tear him to pieces.
With Callahan's orders issued, the team immediately launched a meticulous, grid-by-grid sweep of the compound.
But a nagging question haunted them all.
If the mastermind was so obsessed with total control, why flee from his own fortress in such a panic?
This was his stronghold. Was there a dead-man's switch? A final trap lying in wait?
A few minutes into the sweep, Bason found something out of place on top of a tall, industrial metal cabinet.
"Mr. Langley, Dr. Sloan! Get over here!"
Bason called out, pointing a thick finger at a sleek, silver metal lockbox resting dead center on the cabinet. It was completely unconcealed.
"Might be something inside."
The box was sitting out in the open, practically begging to be found by anyone who bothered to look up.
Hearing Bason, the team gathered around, staring up at the silver box. No one looked relieved.
When something is this easy, it's a trap.
The placement was way too deliberate. And the metal was spotless—no dust, no smudges. It had just been placed there.
