A cold smirk played on Talbot's lips. "Isn't Callahan negotiating for that piece of land in the south of the city? I hear he's made quite a few enemies over it."
His fingertips tapped against the steering wheel. "What if he had a little 'accident' while he's out of town on business..."
Life, after all, is full of 'accidents'. Callahan might fancy himself a business genius, but no matter how brilliant you are, you can't outsmart a bullet. In this day and age, it wouldn't be surprising if something happened to Callahan while he was traveling alone...
Reese immediately understood, her voice dropping to a whisper. "But that area is heavily monitored. What if we get caught..."
"Caught?" Talbot scoffed. "As long as we're clean, who could possibly trace it back to us?"
He had been placing his own pieces on the board for years; it was time to make a move.
He glanced at his wife in the rearview mirror. "You're the one who can't stand that Leilani, right? Once Callahan falls, let's see how arrogant she can be."
A smile finally broke across Reese's face, though her tone remained caustic. "By then, I wouldn't even let her kneel and beg at our doorstep. It would dirty the place."
Reese wasn't worried about what Dante would do if they were exposed. They had already burned that bridge, so there was no harm in burning it to the ground.
If Talbot succeeded, they would gain the entire Langley Group. Compared to that, Reese felt Talbot should have done this long ago. Finally, she could get back at them for all the years of humiliation!
Outside the car window, streetlights flew past, casting fleeting shadows across Talbot's face. He gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white.
This time, he would make Dante watch with his own eyes as his most prized grandson was utterly destroyed.
Beside him, Reese was still rambling on. "Once you've dealt with Callahan, then..."
"Enough," Talbot cut her off, his voice icy. "Stop with the pointless chatter."
The fresh, savory flavor of the fish melted in her mouth, and she couldn't help but smile. "It's delicious."
Satisfied, Letty smiled back, then asked, as if it were an afterthought, "By the way, now that you two have made things official, when are you planning to have the wedding? Do you have any ideas? Do you prefer a traditional or modern style? What about a garden wedding? I see a lot of young people having outdoor ceremonies these days..."
She had thought she'd never get the chance to plan her son's wedding. But now, in a twist of fate, she had a daughter-in-law.
As she spoke about the wedding, Letty's excitement was palpable, seemingly even greater than Leilani's.
The fork in Leilani's hand paused, and her ears turned a subtle shade of pink. "I... I haven't really thought about it."
She looked down, poking at the food in her bowl. "I always felt like things like that were a long way off for me..."
