It was the perfect excuse to take Leilani out for a change of scenery and, more importantly, get her some hands-on training.
Even though he planned to bring a full security detail, Northern Myanor was a notoriously dangerous region. No matter how you looked at it, Leilani needed a way to protect herself.
Leilani was actually thinking the exact same thing. The journey to Northern Myanor was fraught with unknowns; having a reliable weapon of her own was a smart move.
With that in mind, she agreed without hesitation.
"Alright, I'll go with you."
"I've never shopped for anything like this in person anyway. It'll be an eye-opening experience. What time is the flight? I should start packing."
The thought of browsing tactical gear with Callahan felt like embarking on a secret mission. It was thrilling. And frankly, apart from her trip to Zamora Country to treat Arnold, it had been a long time since she had traveled anywhere just for herself.
Hearing her eager agreement, Callahan's tone noticeably lightened.
"I had Lennox book a flight for 1:00 PM tomorrow. I'll pick you up right after I get off work at noon. Remember to pack comfortable clothes and shoes. I'm taking you to the range for some target practice."
Target practice?
Did that mean she'd get to handle live ammunition?
Leilani's only experience with firearms was at local civilian ranges, and even then, she had mostly fired basic target rounds or simulator pistols. The prospect of handling real, military-grade hardware made her pulse race with excitement.
"Got it. I'll see you tomorrow, then."
"Don't work too late tonight," she added, her voice softening just a fraction. "I'll be waiting for you."
Callahan fell silent for a heartbeat. When he spoke again, his voice was deeper, laced with a subtle, protective tenderness.
"What were you doing last night? You look like you didn't sleep well."
Leilani shook her head, her fingers accidentally brushing against his palm as she took the ticket. "I'm fine, just had a restless night."
From the moment she agreed to the trip, Leilani had been busy rearranging her patients' follow-up schedules. Even though her workload had been lighter lately, she still needed to ensure her patients were taken care of while she was away. Fortunately, she hadn't taken on any new cases, and most of her current patients only needed routine check-ins and prescription adjustments, which could easily be managed via her clinic's secure app.
Seeing that she wasn't feeling unwell, Callahan relaxed. He draped an arm around her shoulder with natural ease, guiding her toward the security checkpoint.
"If you feel uncomfortable at any point, tell me right away. You can catch up on sleep once we're on the plane."
...
After a smooth, ten-plus-hour flight, the plane touched down.
