The only flaw this son of his had was his indecisiveness when it came to matters of the heart. He spent all his time hung up on the idea of divorcing Tamara.

"What does any of that have to do with whether or not you inherit the Sherwood Group?" Fitch deflected, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.

Milford frowned, aggressively pressing his point. "We had a deal. You promised me that once the plan succeeded, you would let me divorce her and we'd get rid of the pregnancy. Now that the Sloan family is practically in the palm of your hand, are you backing out? Or was everything you promised just a lie to get me to do your dirty work?"

Fitch fell silent. He wanted to explain the situation, but he didn't even know where to begin. Besides, he had only confided in his most trusted aide about the mysterious figure calling the shots; he certainly hadn't told his son.

Avoiding Milford's piercing gaze, perhaps feeling a twinge of guilt, Fitch softened his tone, even lacing it with a hint of persuasion.

"Things change, Milford. No matter what Tamara has done to us in the past, the child is innocent. At the end of the day, it's our blood. Don't you think getting rid of it is a bit too cruel?"

Milford stared at him, momentarily stunned, before letting out a dark, humorless laugh.

"For the family?" Milford sneered. "More like for yourself. You told me to play a part, and I played it. I swallowed my pride and went groveling to the Sloans just to keep them complacent for you. Now that you practically own them, what else is there left to consider?"

Milford had hit his breaking point. If he kept letting his father pull his strings, he might be chained to Tamara for the rest of his life. That was a reality he absolutely refused to accept.

"I just need you to answer one question for me tonight, Dad," Milford said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Am I divorcing Tamara, and are we getting rid of this kid?"
