The Sloan Group was practically already his.
But the moment he heard the name 'Callahan,' his stomach dropped. For the first time, he found himself doubting the omnipotence of his shadowy backer.
"Boss, Callahan is in a completely different league."
"If he wasn't in the mix, taking over the Sloans would have been a walk in the park."
"But now that he's forced his way to the table... are you absolutely sure you can outplay him?"
"Should we... maybe step back and strategize before we do anything rash?"
His fear was entirely justified. Callahan’s reputation for destroying anyone in his path was legendary.
The line went dead silent for two agonizing seconds. When the voice returned, it was freezing.
"Fitch, are you trying to tell me how to run my operation?"
"No, of course not!" A cold sweat broke out across Fitch's forehead. He scrambled to backtrack.
"I don't care what you meant," the voice sliced through his excuses. "You only need to remember one thing: I can make you a god, and I can bankrupt you before the sun comes up."
The sweat was stinging his eyes now. He could hear his own heart hammering in his chest. "You misunderstood, I swear! I just... I just meant things have gotten complicated. I wanted to ask for your guidance on our next move..."
"Consider this your final warning." The voice didn't raise in volume, but the dead, flat delivery was far more terrifying than a scream. "Question my orders one more time, and you can clean up the Sloan mess on your own. Don't even think about calling me for another dime."
"As for Callahan..."
A beat of silence. Then, a low, distorted chuckle echoed through the speaker. The mechanical distortion made it sound deeply unnerving.
