Desperate to avoid drawing attention, Clive found the most obscure corner of the waiting room and sat down.
He clutched the thin receipt and the pick-up slip in his hand as if it were a death warrant. The few other people scattered around the room all shared the same heavy expressions, their eyes darting away, maintaining a silent, mutual pact to pretend none of them existed.
He had to survive three whole days...
Seventy-two hours.
Absentmindedly, he reached into his pocket and touched the small glass pill bottle. The cold surface made him shudder. Doubts about Zeus's motives, terror over the impending results, and sheer panic regarding his future crashed over him again.
Slumping into the cold plastic chair, he closed his eyes. He felt as though he were dangling off the edge of a cliff, just waiting for the universe to cut the rope.
Every passing second felt like a century.
...
Meanwhile, deep in Northern Myanor, Leilani and the team had discovered an abandoned pipe system leading straight into the compound. To a man, they silently agreed it was a gamble worth taking.
The dark, damp underground tunnel was barely wide enough for one person to crouch through. The air was thick with the stench of rust and mildew, like a forgotten basement that hadn't seen fresh air in decades. Condensation dripped from the ceiling, echoing softly as it hit the puddles below.
Callahan took point, with Leilani close behind. Bason and Payton were in the middle, while Abel and Shaun covered the rear.
The beams of their flashlights danced across the grime-coated concrete walls and rusted pipes. Periodically, they passed old maintenance hatches, their iron doors practically welded shut with rust.
The silence was oppressive, amplifying the sound of their boots splashing in the water. Everyone's breathing sounded entirely too loud.
"Hold up!" Callahan suddenly raised a fist, dropping into a crouch. He ran two fingers over a damp groove in the floor.
Rubbing the wet dirt between his fingers, his eyes darkened, and his tone instantly shifted. "These marks are fresh."
