Could Paulina Cheney's death be connected to this mysterious mastermind?
Paulina had always been in excellent health while in prison. As a medical expert, she would have noticed if something was wrong with her own body. The most suspicious part was the timing—why did she suddenly die of a 'heart attack' right before her release?
It was too deliberate. Was she silenced to prevent her from spilling a secret once she got out?
Leilani's fingertips ran ice-cold. She gently traced Paulina’s face on the photo, murmuring so softly only she could hear. "Master... what were you trying to tell me by sending me here? Was your death just another move on this chessboard?"
Just as the group was processing the weight of this massive conspiracy, a loud mechanical grind echoed from the distance.
They snapped back to reality, heads whipping toward the source of the noise.
"Fuck! The door's closing!"
They had fought tooth and nail to make it up from the basement to the first floor. Seeing their only exit about to shut, Shaun’s eyes went red. He didn't even think; he just bolted forward.
"Shaun, don't!" Callahan grabbed his arm, yanking him back.
The moment the words left his mouth, the side doors flanking the main hall burst open with a deafening crash. Seven or eight athletic men dressed in tactical black swarmed in. Silent and lethal, they fanned out, completely blocking the path to the main doors.
Their movements were perfectly synchronized—highly trained mercenaries.
"Damn it, a trap!" Bason cursed. He immediately pivoted, shielding Callahan and the others behind his massive frame, dropping into a defensive stance.
