Chapter 26-2
“Yes. I think his mother did get to see him once a year at most- as long as she didn’t risk his exposure.”
I realize I don’t know anything about Raphael. Maybe I’m being too hard on him.
I sigh, but leave those thoughts for later, and follow the guard to Lady Alma’s room.
“Hello?”
“Oh! It’s you!” She jumps up and rushes to me, clasping my hands. “I owe you my life!” She pulls me into a hug.
“I’m just glad I came to see you that night.”
“Me too! Please, come in.”
“How have you been feeling?” I ask.
“Good as new, though from time to time I get a little sting when I move too fast.” She smiles. “And you’re looking well. The first time we met you were roughed up a bit. I was so worried.”
Such motherly energy. I’ve never felt this before.

patio couch and table wait. Flowers spill across the space,
turning it into an overgrown garden retreat. She pours me a cup of tea, and we sit together.
“So what exact reason did you come here for?” she asks.
“I wanted to see how you were doing.”
She nods. “But there’s something else. I can see it.”
“I… well, Raphael told me of your lineage. I hope it’s not too bold for me to ask about it? Specifically… the Raven Wolf King.”
“The Raven… Wolf King?”
I nod.
She looks up, thinking. “I only know of a story passed down through generations. Most likely, those aren’t even true.”
“Either way, would you tell me?”
She gives a quick nod. “The Raven Wolf King was fathered and mothered by a forbidden union. A werewolf… and a Raven Hag.”
“A… what?”
“Many creatures from lore used to exist back then. Now, many areДextinct. A Raven Hag is a witch attuned with ravers.” 18:36

“Connected or linked. Their magic revolved around these creatures. Ravens were their familiars.”
“I see.”
She continues. “Contrary to belief, Hags were beautiful and lured men with their beauty, usually to conceive abominations- but they never survived more than a few years.”
Holy crap. This turned out not as I expected.
“Supposedly, one of the Great Wolf Kings of Old was lured by one of these Raven Hags, and the Raven Wolf King was conceived of this union. Unfortunately, that’s all I know about him besides what’s common knowledge. He rose up and became king, then died at the hands of my ancestor, the High Wolf King. Well… both of them died at each other’s hands.”
“Did the Raven Wolf King have children? Descendants?”
“No. At least it’s not known.”
What if they’re wrong, and he did have children? What if… I’m a descendant? But then… wouldn’t Jade be too? Maybe she’s experiencing strange things like I am, only hiding them. And my parents… Father has always been distant, but I can’t forget that night when the ravens attacked the ball. Mother panicked in a way I’d never seen before. Could she be a descendant too? gram I reaching? Maybe I’m just being foolish.

I feel like I have even more questions now than ever.
I spend a bit more time with Alma, not wanting her to think I’m just trying to use her for information. She’s quite a nice lady, and I find her so inviting. I get why Raphael wants to protect her so much. She must have been a wonderful mother to him.
When she seems tired, I leave her and head back to my room.
