Chapter 43-1
Chapter 43
~Valeria~
Father, Mother, Jade, and I sit in the garden at a table having breakfast, looking like a real family as Father tells us what happened.
“It was devastated.”
“The camp?” I ask.
“Yes. We lost the camp. The enemy gained the upper hand. Our own men betrayed us.”
This is what Raphael had told me.
“In the middle of the night, they let the enemy in, and we were attacked from inside. We still won the fight, but we knew we had to pull back. We weren’t about to leave the enemy a place to claim, so we burned it. I was in terrible shape and barely made it out alive. Lieutenant Ivy Rochdale saved me.”
“The Beta’s daughter,” I mutter.
“Yes. I’ll be recommending her for promotion. Maybe to be the Its female General.”

Looking inside the same rooms I’ve already checked twice, and nothing. I even checked his room.
I stop in my tracks when I see Finn-and everyone else does too. He limps through the hall, leaning on two walking poles, one in each hand. His body is marked with scars, his arms wrapped in bandages. Though every step is a struggle, he looks far better than the last time I saw him.
He smiles as people gather, offering their congratulations on his
recovery.
Finally, I see Raphael. He steps out of a room with several Generals, looking disheveled. His eyes sweep the hall, and when they land on me, he exhales a breath of pure relief. I feel it too.
I move toward him, and as soon as I reach him, he pulls me back into the office he just left, now empty, and shuts the door behind
The moment he turns, my lips are already on his. His arms wrap around me, holding me tight, his embrace strong.
I pull away, taking a deep breath. “What the hell was this? I missed you too damn much.”
“Fuck, I love you so much!” He kisses me again. “I couldn’t think, couldn’t concentrate.”

you’re mine.” Another sudden kiss catches me off guard. It makes me moan. My hands slide down to his pants, but he immediately grabs them. “I can’t. I have a meeting I should be in right now.”
“When will you be done?” I can’t hide my disappointment.
A small, apologetic shake of his head follows. “I have meetings stacked one after another today. And we’ll be holding Dorian’s wake in private. My father has grown weary of the whispers and gossip among the people, so he doesn’t want any of them there.”
“I see. Tonight, then?”
He slowly shakes his head again. “If I’m in at all, it’ll be late.”
“That’s not fair! I need you. We’re newly mated, and because of that, I’ll be craving you nonstop.”
“I know. I am too.” He cups my face and softly kisses me. “Stay in my room, but make sure no one other than Urien sees you. Once I’m done tonight, we can see each other.”
I grunt so loud, it echoes in the room.
“I’m sorry, Valeria.” He kisses me one last time and begins to walk away. “But these meetings are important, especially now.”
ine. I get it. But I don’t have to like it.”

When he opens the door, he stumbles into someone outside.
“Raphael! There you are. I’ve been wanting to see you since I arrived.”
I walk out after Raphael and see that fiery red-haired girl-Ivy.
She looks at me and then at Raphael.
“Oh. It’s nice to see you, Ivy,” he says.
She looks back at me, her expression serious. I can’t help myself —I wipe my mouth with one finger, smiling as I slide my hands across Raphael’s back. He stiffens at my touch.

“See you later,” I whisper. Then I turn and sashay my way through the hall with a grin so wide that neither of them can see.
He is my man.
The whole day I’m restless, aching to see Raphael. Glimpses of him here and there only make the longing worse. Newly mated werewolves crave each other constantly—it’s the honeymoon phase-and this distance feels cruel.
From the window, I finally catch sight of him in the garden. He’s locked in a heated exchange with Fera. She refuses to stop pressing herself on him, but I trust him. His every gesture. shows he wants nothing to do with her. When she dares to slide a hand along his arm, he nearly shoves her away. “Enough!” he shouts, and even I can hear him from here. “I don’t want you, I will never want you! You and I are not happening! End of the damn story! If you speak to me again, I’ll have you sent to the. dungeon!”
“Good boy,” I mutter.
Fera freezes at his words. The confidence drains from her face, leaving her pale and hollow as he walks away from her.
I smile and carry on with my day.

crash course. We don’t have any more time to waste. Today will be the last of your introductory training. Tomorrow you’ll be split into your specialty. Werewolves will be trained in their supernatural trait, and the wolfless will train with projectiles. You’ll all have to be ready within a week, especially the wolfless. You’ll be stationed at the border with your wolfless superiors during the full moon festival. Which means we’re training from sunup to sundown. No more taking it easy. You’ve been fully drafted.”
Well… fuck…
The crowd of rookies erupts in sudden disarray.
“One week?” “That’s impossible.”
Grimm leans into me and whispers, “This is so fucked up.”
“Yeah, but I think it’s because things are getting bad with the enemy.”
