Chapter 346 Tampering With Hannah’s Memories
Barnaby stood off to the side, never taking his eyes off them as they hypnotized Hannah.
Just then, the computer hooked up to Hannah’s brainwaves beebed, flagging a data anomaly.
The three snapped their eyes to the computer screen. Hannah, who’d been slouched in her chair, suddenly bolted upright, eyes wide open.
Her eyes were red and wild, and a twisted, unsettling smile curled at her lips. She looked downright creepy.
Their expressions turned grim. Percival and Freud had never seen Hannah like this before, but they’d watched Magnus’s video of her stress episode-it was almost exactly the same.
Barnaby had seen Hannah’s emergency meltdowns before, so he didn’t hesitate. Before she could even get up, he moved lightning-fast, chopping her on the side of the neck and knocking her out cold.
Freud: ‘!!!’
Percival: ‘Uh… what just happened?’
“It’s broad daylight. Why is she still freaking out like she’s got a fear of the dark?” Barnaby asked.
Freud quickly checked the computer. The brainwave readings that had set off the alert had already gone back to normal after Hannah blacked out.
He breathed a sigh of relief and explained, “It’s her subconscious memories kicking in, making her body panic. Ms. Carter isn’t actually scared of the dark-it’s just that darkness sets off those buried memories.”
“The memory Ms. Carter is trying to dig up is so deep in her subconscious, it triggers a survival crisis, so her body automatically goes into self-preservation mode,” he added.
Percival said, “It’s kind of like split personality, but Ms. Carter’s core self is strong enough to keep another personality from forming.”
Barnaby frowned. “Is it possible to alter her subconscious memories?”
“It’s possible, but I really wouldn’t recommend it,” Freud said. “It’s not good for her recovery. Even if her brain can withstand the alteration, there’s no telling if one day she’ll recall those changed memories. It’s just too risky.”
Barnaby narrowed his eyes, watching Hannah slumped unconscious in the chair.
Just thinking about how she kept putting herself through so much pain, trying to dig up that memory, made his heart ache.
He didn’t want her to ever relive it. If he could, he’d wish for her to forget it forever.
“Alter that memory buried in her subconscious,” Barnaby said, his tone calm but resolute.
Freud was stunned. Only villains would use hypnosis to implant their own ideas or alter a patient’s memories. Any real psychologist would have professional ethics and never cross that line.
‘Isn’t Barnaby the Nameless Healer’s boyfriend?’ Freud thought, baffled.
He couldn’t believe Barnaby’d actually make such a request.
“No way! I can’t do that. It goes against my professional ethics,” Freud shot back.
“Just do it. Don’t make me say it a third time,” Barnaby said, pulling a gun from behind his back and leveling it at Freud. Freud stared at the cold, black barrel pointed right at him, swallowing hard.
“Doc, just listen to him, okay? Barnaby would never lay a finger on Hannah. He’s doing this because he wants what’s best for her,” Percival pleaded.
“We’ve already discussed Hannah’s condition. Right now, her subconscious is running the show. Whenever she’s in the dark, those buried memories come rushing out, and her body just freaks,” Percival explained.
“If this keeps happening, she’s way more likely to develop a spli personality, and that’s even riskier. You said yourself- those messed-up memories in her subconscious need to be willed,” he added.
“When I said ‘clear’, I meant she needs to come to terms with those memories herself, Freud argued.
“She can’t accept that memory!” Barnaby’s voice was icy.
He wished she’d never have to relive it.
There was no way Freud could argue with the

Barnaby had been by her side the whole time. When he saw her wake up, he softly called out, “Sweetie?”
“How did I end up falling asleep?” Hannah blinked, a little lost. As she moved, her neck ached, so she rolled it side to side and complained to Percival, “This chair sucks. I swear, it’s a recipe for a crick in the neck.”
Percival felt a bit unfair but just said, “I’ll get someone to swap out for a better one.”
“Let me rub it for you,” Barnaby offered, sounding a little sheepish as his hand landed on her shoulder. Then he asked, testing the waters, “Did anything come back to you?”
Hannah thought hard, but aside from those old childhood memories of playing with Barnaby, she couldn’t remember a thing.
‘So that hypnosis thing didn’t do the trick?’ Hannah thought to herself.
She shook her head, and Barnaby finally relaxed. “Hungry? Let’s go grab some dinner.”
“Okay,” Hannah replied. She glanced around the clinic-only Percival was still there, and Freud was nowhere in sight. “Hey, where’s your doc?” she asked Percival.
Percival shrugged, “He had something to deal with, so he headed out early.”
Hannah found it a little strange. As she left the clinic, she kept feeling like something was missing-like she’d forgotten something important, but for the life of her, she just couldn’t put her finger on it.
“What’s up?” Barnaby asked as he buckled her seatbelt, seeing her spaced out and feeling a bit uneasy.
“Nothing,” Hannah replied, pulling herself together. “So, what are we eating? I’m starving.”
“Hang tight, we’re almost there,” Barnaby said, eyes on the road.
Half an hour later, the car rolled up to the entrance of a famous #erris wheel amusement park, the kind that’s all over social media. Two bodyguards were stationed at the gate.
It was Valentine’s Day, and tons of couples had come out to celebrate, only to get stopped at the entrance.
“What the heck? We reserved our spot weeks ago! How can they just cancel on us last minute?” one couple complained.
“Just our luck-first date and the whole place is off-limits,” another couple sighed.
