She always looked quiet and well-behaved, never showing any obvious unhappiness on the surface, yet anyone could tell something weighed on her mind.
Now, though, it was clear her mood had shifted, like she had something warm to look forward
Zora brushed the corner of her mouth. Maybe… she really had been smiling softly without noticing.
Zora parted ways with Hallie after Hallie promised she’d study hard for the monthly exam and sit close to Zora afterward.
Zora then dragged her feet back to her seat, unaware their quiet chat had been overheard by someone nearby, who pressed their lips together thoughtfully.
“Zora, did you finish your homework?”
As soon as Zora sat down, Easton turned around from the row in front of her.
The faint smile on Zora’s lips froze instantly.
Why was it that on every first day back at school, the very first question was always, “Did you finish your homework?”
“Look at her face-does she look like she got it all done?” Felix also turned around, resting one hand against his forehead with a teasing grin.

“I did.” Faced with their playful gazes, Zora felt she had to maintain her dignity. She bared her teeth in a mock snarl.
She’d only left a little unfinished, that was all.
Zora wasn’t exactly a fan of homework. She was a world-class procrastinator, and it was only last night that she had dragged her assignments out to pull an all-nighter.
She’d finished all her humanities assignments, but struggled half the night with science problems, staring blankly at the page without writing a single word.
“If you haven’t finished, hurry and catch up,” Easton held back a laugh and reminded her kindly. “First period is Mr. Wyatt’s class, and he always checks homework.”
Zora said nothing, quietly taking out her books and starting to fill in the blank answers.
Even surrounded by the busy study atmosphere at school, Zora still felt no drive to focus.
Clutching a pink strawberry-themed pen, she tapped it absently against the
paper.

Senior year felt endless-nothing but practice questions day in and day out for a whole year. Thinking about it made her feel like her future was bleak.
Science assignment wore her mind out, humanities wore her hand out. None of her subjects was the slightest bit easy.
“I really want some iced chocolate,” Zora whispered to herself.
She badly needed a sweet drink to recharge her energy.
She hadn’t left the house all weekend, so she hadn’t gotten any iced chocolate at all.
Now that school was back in session, she planned to head to the campus drink shop after class to grab a cup.
Her brain deserved a little treat after all this studying.
Since leaving the Knox Villa, Zora had realized how affordable everyday things were out in
town.
A cup of iced chocolate only cost four or five dollars.
She had three million dollars saved up! She could drink it every single day, forever if she wanted.
She could even cut back on steak just to have her favorite drink whenever she liked.
The restaurant she’d gone to with Hallie and the others was cheap too. They’d ordered so much food and only spent a little over 500 dollars.
Everything in Seacrest felt far more affordable than back in Maplewood.
With the money she’d earned selling ginseng years ago, she could live comfortably for a long time as long as she didn’t splurge on expensive designer dresses and fancy jewelry like Jolie always showed off.
Zora debated slipping out right away to buy some iced chocolate. All this studying wore her mind out, and she never skimped on treating herself to something nice.
Having talked herself into it, she was just about to stand up when a warm light touch brushed
her arm.
She turned her head and met a pair of gentle, quiet eyes.
The girl wore a plain white cotton T-shirt. Her skin was fair enough to look almost translucent, faint blue veins showing along her slender wrists as she held out a cup of iced chocolate.

“The shop drinks aren’t good for you. You shouldn’t have too many,” Maya said softly.

Her voice was calm with a gentle warmth, like slow, quiet water drifting along the riverbank amid rushing currents.
“Wow, you made this for me?” Zora’s face lit up with delight. She quickly took the cup with both hands, stuck in the straw, and took a slow sip. Her eyes brightened instantly.
Maya was amazing at making drinks-this homemade iced chocolate tasted absolutely perfect.
A faint smile tugged at Maya’s eyes, hidden behind her bangs, at Zora’s compliment.
“I’ll help you with the problems,” Maya said in her soft, clear tone.
Even when she had to explain a single problem dozens of times because Zora struggled with basic knowledge and theories, Maya never grew impatient.
“Really? Yes, please!” Zora agreed happily.
With the sweet iced chocolate as motivation, homework didn’t feel quite so unbearable
anymore.
She still only half-understood most of what Maya explained, but she could follow her train of thought to work through the problems step by step.
She might not fully grasp the logic afterward, but at least she could finish the work on her own instead of copying someone else’s answers.
After days of studying together and going over lessons, Zora could finally follow along with Maya’s explanations just a little bit.
Maya pulled her chair closer beside Zora.
Zora sipped her iced chocolate quietly while listening to Maya read through the textbook problems in her soft, steady voice.
Zora couldn’t help feeling lucky to have such a kind, thoughtful classmate.
