Chapter 104 Dinner Invitation.

They had already gone out of their way to find her an apartment and arrange everything for her. She didn’t want to trouble them further; she could easily grab something simple to eat on her own.
“Then come have dinner with me. I haven’t eaten either,” Leighton said with a quiet nod, inviting her over.
“I’m fine, don’t go out of your way for me.” Zora turned him down gently.
She could just get something casual back at her place. Jensen and the others had stocked her apartment with plenty of snacks, so she could make do for now. She planned to grab a bite at the diner tomorrow at noon anyway.
Zora had never learned to cook-her mentor had always made all her meals back when she lived in Maplewood.
“It’s no trouble at all. If Jensen found out I let you go home hungry without a proper meal. I’d never be able to face him again. C’mon, I’m eating alone anyway, and it gets pretty lonely. Keep me company, Zora.”
Leighton pressed the button for his floor, and the elevator began its steady ascent.
Zora fell silent. He made it sound like he was utterly miserable and lonely without her there to keep him company. He ate alone all the time when she wasn’t around, didn’t he?
She’d gotten so caught up in their conversation that she’d forgotten to press her own floor button.

Her backpack was slung over his shoulder, with all her schoolwork inside-she couldn’t just leave it behind.
More than that, he’d brought up Jensen, and Zora hated being the reason her cousin worried over her.
Fine, she’d stay for dinner. She glanced sideways at his sharp, defined profile, soft light from the elevator casting gentle shadows across his face. He looked breathtaking.
For all his dramatic, pitiful words were probably just an act, Zora’s heart softened. She couldn’t bear to see him sounding so dejected.
Besides… eating alone really was lonely.
Back when she’d lived at the Knox Villa, Jolie would often drag Wendy out shopping for hours, and the Knox brothers rarely stayed home. Most days, she was left all alone in that strange, unfamiliar house with no one around.

She also had something she needed to give him anyway.
Zora followed Leighton out onto the nineteenth-floor hallway. The decor here matched the eighteenth floor exactly.
Leighton pressed his fingerprint against the lock, and the front door clicked open.
He stepped aside to let Zora walk in first. She crossed the threshold and stayed close to the entrance, not wandering off or staring around curiously.
“I don’t have any slippers that’ll fit you here, Zora. Just wear mine for now-this pair’s brand new. I’ll get a proper set ready for you next time.”

Leighton closed the door, bent down to open the shoe cabinet, pulled out two pairs of slippers, unwrapped the new ones, and set them down neatly at her feet before slipping on his own pair.
Zora stepped into the new slippers. They were far too big for her small, slender feet; her toes shifted awkwardly inside the oversized footwear with no room to settle properly.
w… how are your feet this tiny?” Leighton watched her, barely holding back a smile.
“Well now…
Her feet were so small that it felt like his own foot could fit right inside the slipper with hers.
Zora lifted her gaze to glance at him. “It’s just that your feet are too big.”
There was no way it was her fault.
“Alright, alright. My feet are too big, it’s all my fault,” Leighton conceded immediately when he met her clear, innocent eyes, not bothering to argue back.
He was already making a mental note to stock up on everything she might need for next time.
He had returned from the neighboring city this afternoon. On the way back, he’d passed a bakery and, knowing she lived just below him, he’d wondered if he might run into her. He’d stopped to buy a small dessert, but because he’d moved in so hurriedly, he hadn’t had time to stock up on daily necessities for her.
Regardless of whether she’d need them, having them ready ensured she wouldn’t be without.
“Come on in. Make yourself at home, Zora.”
Leighton led her into the living room and set her backpack down on the sofa. “Have a seat for a
moment.”
He slipped off his suit jacket, draped it over the couch, and turned toward the kitchen.
Zora sat quietly on the sofa, not moving an inch. She let her eyes drift around the taking in the space.

It had a minimalist style, nothing like her own unit downstairs-the one Jensen had decorated carefully with thoughtful little touches everywhere.
The whole place leaned into soft white tones, accented sparingly with sleek black furniture. The living room lights were turned on, filling every corner with bright, warm light as if it were broad daylight.
Soon, the sound of running water drifted over from the kitchen, then fell quiet moments later. Zora’s gaze froze in place.
Leighton stood there with a black apron tied neatly around his lean waist, his long legs straight in tailored black slacks. His necktie was gone, the collar of his fine dress shirt undone to reveal a slender neck and prominent Adam’s apple, his hair neat and slightly tousled.
His long fingers held a plate in one hand and a carton of milk in the other. He carried an effortless, laid-back charm that suited him perfectly.
Zora pressed her lips together quietly. He really was stunningly handsome.
Wearing an apron gave him an entirely different vibe from how she’d always seen him before.
It was exactly that vibe Hallie always talked about… the husband material look. Yeah. The kind of man anyone would want to settle down with.
“Zora, I don’t have any snacks here, just fruit. Let’s have some fruit to tide us over.”
