Chapter 12 A Dreamlike Room

Jensen figured his grandma used this trick on him and his brother all the time, and it always worked. Zora would never see through it, right?

He had no idea Zora knew medicine.

He didn’t know she’d already caught his lie.

That earned him the cold shoulder from Zora for a long time afterward.

“Zora, sweetie, just stay with us,” Opal pleaded, acting cute.

Zora wasn’t even eighteen yet. Where would she go? They couldn’t let her leave.

“Yeah, Zora. The house is so empty without you. Just us two old folks,” Floyd added.

“They’re still here,” Zora said, nodding at the two brothers.

“Oh, don’t mention those good-for-nothing boys! One lives at the office, the other at the hospital. They’re never home. Your grandpa and I practically forgot we have grandsons.”

Opal complained nonstop about her grandsons.

The Marlow family was small. She and Floyd only had two kids: an older son and a daughter.

Their older son had three boys: Jensen, Kian, and Reed.

That had made the Marlow family feel much livelier.

But once Jensen grew up, their parents dumped the company on him and went traveling.

Kian went straight into research and hospital work after college. He was always busy, rarely home.

Their youngest grandson was even worse. He’d run off to some city for summer break-climbing mountains, crossing deserts, skydiving. He was out of contact half the time. They only knew he was alive from the occasional video he sent.

He kept the whole family on tenterhooks.

Opal could complain about her three grandsons for hours.

Zora listened quietly.

“Zora, please stay? School starts in a few days. If you want to live closer to campus later, we can move there. But for these next few days, stay here, okay? I miss you so much.”

Opal stared at her hopefully.

Fearing Zora might still refuse, she compromised, asking Zora to at least stay at the Marlow Manor until the school term began.

Only seven days left.

“…Okay.”

Zora pressed her lips together, looked at their eager eyes, and nodded.

Just seven days.

They were being kind. It would be rude to refuse.

Besides, while Opal was healthy, Floyd had mild issues-night headaches and insomnia. It wasn’t serious yet, but it could lead to worse problems over time. She could stay and help him adjust.

This could be her way of thanking them for their care.

She just didn’t have enough herbs. She’d need to go buy some tomorrow.

She kept it to herself so they wouldn’t worry. His condition was still manageable.

The two brothers sighed in relief. They secretly gave Opal a thumbs-up.

Opal glanced at them and huffed.

Useless boys. I had to do everything.

After dinner, it was still light out-summer evenings were long.

Zora chatted with her grandparents, mostly answering their questions. They didn’t mind her quietness; they only felt more sorry for her.

Zora got up to go to her room.

“Zora, I had a room fixed up for you on the third floor. Come with me.”

Jensen had been watching her. Seeing her get up to leave, he followed suit.

Zora didn’t know where to stay, so she didn’t refuse.

She followed him upstairs, Kian right behind.

“Zora, I had it done this afternoon. If you don’t like it, I’ll change everything right away.

“This floor is ours-Kian and I are next to you. Just call if you need anything.

“Grandma and Grandpa are on the second floor.”

They reached the third floor, and Jensen opened the middle door.

Pastel pink everywhere. A fluffy princess bed, soft rug, stuffed animals.

Sheer cream curtains drifted in the breeze.

Outside the window, a whole garden of pink roses.

It was a dreamlike princess’ chamber.

Zora stood in the doorway, thinking it was made for a real princess.

She hesitated, almost too nervous to step inside.
