Zora could not help thinking that every one of the three Knox brothers had an unbelievably thick skin in their own way.
“That can’t be. Mom would never skip sending you a monthly allowance.”
Yale’s tone was firm, refusing to believe a word Zora said.
“Believe it or not. Not a single dollar has ever come from any of you.”
Talking to him drained Zora’s patience, and she had no desire to argue further.
Yale stared straight into her eyes. Her expression was earnest, her gaze clear and calm with no trace of lying at all.
“There must be some kind of misunderstanding here. Mom was always supposed to send you regular spending money.”
It dawned on him that something might have gone wrong behind the scenes.
There was no way their mother would neglect Zora financially, yet Zora didn’t look like she was fabricating this. Some mistake had to be at play.
“It has nothing to do with me. I owe none of you anything. If you insist on counting the two months I stayed under your roof and the meals I ate there, I can pay you back in full right now.”
Zora lifted her chin to meet his eyes, her tone plain and sincere.

She cared little whether there was a misunderstanding or not. She had long stopped holding any expectations of the Knox family.
If Yale wanted to settle accounts over the tasteless meals she’d endured at the Knox Villa, she was willing to pay up. It felt like a waste of money compensating for such plain food, but if he insisted, she could easily afford it.
“Zora, that’s not what I mean. I just want to talk things through properly. Can we sit down and talk?”
Yale frowned, frustrated by her clear wish to cut all ties with the family.
It was as if she intended to erase every bond between them completely.
“I see nothing left to talk about. There is no real affection between us. I have barely met you a handful of times, and we share no bond as sister and brother. There is simply nothing to discuss.”
Zora shook her head firmly. There was nothing left to say.

“Zora, if you truly cared nothing for our family, why did you make me that nourishing soup? Why prepare a calming herbal tonic for Anton? You only just came back to us, and so many conflicts have happened before we even had the chance to know each other properly. There are misunderstandings between us. Let us talk it out. We are blood family.”
Yale let out a weary sigh.
He studied the girl before him; she bore the unmistakable features of the Knox family.
Shared blood ran in their veins, yet somehow they had ended up distant and estranged.
Truthfully, Yale had never known how to get along with this newly returned sister. He had never spent any real time with her.
Running the family company kept Yale exhausted enough as it was, leaving him little energy for household matters.
He knew they had brought home their real sister, but she seemed quiet, timid, reserved, and almost invisible around the house-only drawing notice whenever she caused trouble.
She had seemed rebellious and petty, always picking on Jolie.
He had been genuinely furious when she tore up his bidding proposal, causing the bid to fail.
Though he hadn’t held it against her later, it had certainly created a rift in his heart.
The family felt deep guilt over the mix-up and had wanted to make amends, yet she never gave them the chance. She kept pushing Jolie away, putting the whole family in an awkward spot and breaking their mother’s heart again and again.
Little by little, their guilt faded, replaced by weariness at the mere mention of her name.
Eventually, she’d left in anger, dragging the whole household’s mood to an all-time low.
Everyone was unhappy when Zora was home, yet they remained unhappy even after she left.
Not long ago, Holden had even gotten into a shouting match with their mother.
Before her arrival, the family had lived in perfect harmony. Since her return, everything had changed.
Their mother was constantly weighed down with worry, Jolie endured endless unfair treatment, and the three brothers were caught awkwardly in the middle.
Even Jolie’s personality had shifted because of it.
Yale was far from foolish. After today’s run-in, he realized the friction between Zora and Jolie

Still, learning she’d secretly prepared his nourishing soup and quietly looked out for him had made him think she still cared for the family deep down.
He began to see she was not without kindness.
There were just too many tangled misunderstandings between them to untangle quickly.
That was why he wanted to talk calmly, clear everything up, and remind her they were the only ones who could rely on each other by blood.
At the mention of the nourishing soup, Zora’s expression froze for a split second before settling back into indifference.
“I wasn’t in my right mind back then. I am now. None of you is worth my effort anymore.”
