Chapter 14 A Princess Deserves Nice Things
“Right away.” Paul, the butler, smiled and headed for the kitchen.
“Grandma. Grandpa.”
“Zora, didn’t Jensen get you any new clothes?”
Opal frowned when she saw Zora’s faded white T-shirt and frayed jeans. The shirt was yellowed from washing, and the jeans were threadbare at the edges.
“He did.”
Zora didn’t understand the question, but she remembered the closet in her room and nodded.
It was full of beautiful clothes.
She just hadn’t thought they were for her.

She was still wearing what her mentor had bought her back in Maplewood. The fabric was pilled in places, but she didn’t care.
As long as she had something to wear.
Her mentor had worn the same clothes for years. He’d always bought her new things every season anyway.
“Don’t you like what Jensen picked? I’ll take you shopping, or have things delivered. You choose whatever you want.”
Opal assumed Zora disliked the clothes and wanted to replace them immediately.
“It’s okay, Grandma. I have clothes from Maplewood.” Zora shook her head.
She didn’t have much money, and she needed it for herbs, not outfits.
“Zora, the clothes Jensen bought are yours. Wear whatever you like.”
Opal’s heart ached. She cursed her daughter inwardly.
Wendy hadn’t even given Zora proper clothes.
Floyd’s cheerful expression faded too.
The Knoxs were ridiculous. How could they treat their own daughter like this?
“Come on. I’ll help you choose. You’re so beautiful-you need pretty things.”
Opal suppressed her anger, planning to yell at Wendy later. She took Zora’s hand and led her back upstairs.
She opened the closet. Inside was a row of this season’s latest high-end designs.
“Grandma, my clothes are fine.”

Zora didn’t want to owe the Marlows too much.
“Fine? They’re falling apart! You’re our princess now. A princess should be pampered. Sit. Let me pick something.”
Opal was decisive. She saw Zora’s hesitation and sighed.
The Knoxs had hurt her deeply. Who knew how long it would take to earn back her trust?
She pushed Zora gently onto the bed and handed her a soft yellow dress.
“Put this on. Let me see. You’ll look lovely,” Opal urged.
“Grandma, I need to go out and buy some things.”
After finishing her meal, Zora went back to her room to grab her canvas bag.
“Sure. I’ll have the driver take you.” Opal didn’t stop her.
“Thank you, Grandma.”
Zora didn’t refuse.
The Marlow Manor was far from downtown. Taxis were hard to get and expensive.
She was going for herbs for her grandpa anyway, so using the family car was just practical.
“Here, take this. Buy whatever you need.”
After giving the arrangements, Opal pressed a card into her hand.
“I have my own money, Grandma.”
Zora knit her brows.
Her mentor had left her savings.
Besides, the herbs she was buying weren’t expensive. She’d already called her old neighbor, Earl, last night and asked him to pack up the precious medicinal herbs and ship them to Seacrest for her.
She would have them soon.
She’d make Floyd’s medicine once they arrived.
Today she also wanted to look for an apartment.
“Take it. Your money is yours. This is from me. I want to spoil you.”
Just from Zora’s clothes, Opal could already tell not to expect much from her daughter’s family.
Whether they’d given her money or not, she wasn’t about to let Zora go short on cash.

If they had, fine-they weren’t completely heartless. If not, she’d chew her daughter out again next time
After dinner last night, Opal had called her daughter and ripped into her all over again before hanging up
“Go on. The driver’s waiting. Call Jensen if you stay out for lunch-he’ll take you somewhere nice.”
Opal tucked the gold card firmly into Zora’s hand and turned to Floyd. “Dear, help me with these flowers.”
Zora stared at the card. It looked familiar.
She had one just like it in her bag-from her mentor.
She walked toward the door, deep in thought.
