Elara looked quite surprised to spot him. She stopped pinching Zora’s cheek and sized him up curiously.

She then shot a subtle questioning glance toward Hallie, silently asking when he had arrived.

Hallie signaled back that he had picked them up and driven them home.

Elara looked utterly doubtful that he would be this thoughtful all of a sudden.

Hallie simply nodded to confirm it was true.

The two exchanged wordless glances, fully understanding each other’s thoughts.

“I happen to be free today.” Leighton came to stand beside Zora.

The girl’s eyes still sparkled brightly, her cheeks tinted with a faint, shy blush.

Zora had suffered plenty of cold treatment from the Knox family, who had never given her genuine family warmth. Yet Elara was entirely different. Her love was sincere and unrestrained, which slowly let the quiet girl truly feel loved.

Feeling his gaze rest on her, Zora looked up and met his smiling eyes.

“Thank you, Leighton.”

Her eyes curved gently, shining bright like scattered starlight.

She was truly grateful to him, for it was all thanks to him that she had such caring parents who doted on her deeply.

“You deserve all the love in the world. There’s no need to thank me.”

There were delicate hair ornaments tucked in her hair, so Leighton dared not ruffle her hair casually. He lowered his eyes and spoke to her earnestly.

Jeremy watched the scene quietly from the side, a hint of surprise flashing across his face. He frowned slightly for a moment before looking away again.

“Since everyone’s here, let’s head over for dinner. You all stay over tonight, right?” Chet saw Leighton and walked over, saying with a smile.

The whole group headed to the dining area.

They gathered around the large wooden dining table. Chet took the main seat, Elara and Jeremy sat on the left side, and the younger ones settled on the right.

Leighton sat right next to Chet on his right. Hallie gently pushed Zora to sit beside him. Hallie didn’t want to sit next to her freezing cousin.

Leighton isn’t freezing to Zora, so Zora can take the hit and sit next to him.

“Zora, try this meatball stew. It’s our chef’s signature dish, absolutely amazing.” Elara happily served food onto Zora’s plate during the meal.

“Have some too, Hallie. You look like you’ve lost weight again. If the school cafeteria food isn’t tasty, you can eat out or have meals delivered.” She also put some food on Hallie’s plate.

She made sure both girls had plenty to eat.

“I haven’t lost any weight at all. I feel like I’ve actually put on a few pounds,” Hallie took a bite and replied casually.

“Thank you, Mom.”

Zora stared at the savory meatball stew on her plate, clearly craving the delicious food, yet she did not take a bite. Instead, she glanced timidly toward Leighton.

Can I eat it? It smells far too tempting.

“Are you keeping her from eating properly?”

“Leighton, maybe we should take Zora in and look after her here from now on,” Chet said in a sincere tone.

Before Leighton could say a word, Zora quickly spoke up to defend him.

“He treats me really well; it’s just my own body condition that limits my diet, nothing else.”

She did not want Leighton to be misunderstood because of her.

“Sweetie, are you unwell? Have you seen a doctor? How serious is it? Why didn’t you tell us anything?” Elara was instantly filled with worry.

“Let me check your condition for you, Zora.” Chet also looked concerned.

“She is in stable physical condition.” After checking Zora’s pulse, Chet looked faintly stunned.

He caught Leighton’s subtle head shake and chose not to bring the matter up in front of everyone else.

Hearing Chet’s words, the rest of the family finally felt relieved.

“You poor thing. Once you fully get better, I’ll take you all out for a fancy feast.”

After dinner, night had already fallen. Everyone went back to their rooms to freshen up and get ready for rest.

Chet retreated to his study, and Leighton followed him there shortly after.

“You know all about Zora’s real physical state, don’t you?”

Chet sat beside a table and brewed a pot of coffee slowly.
