Chapter 279 He Wanted to Attend It

She started thinking about asking Floyd for help.

“Your grandparents are all elderly. Parent-teacher conferences last a long time. Sitting for hours straight isn’t good for their health.”

That left her with no one else to ask.

Her mentor was no longer around either.

“What about Jett?”

Zora thought of Jett. He was a good friend of Jensen’s. Still young, he surely had enough patience to sit through the entire meeting.

He should be able to attend the parent-teacher conference for her, right?

“Jett is tied up with personal family issues lately. He has no spare time.”

He couldn’t believe she’d thought of Jett first, when he was right there in front of her the whole time.

“Is there anyone on your side who can go? Tristan works too, right?”

Everyone she thought of was unavailable. She really had no one left.

If nothing else worked, she would just attend the conference as her own parent.

“Tristan has official work to handle.”

She could even think of Tristan, yet she still failed to think of him.

“Fine. You go for me then.”

Zora grew suspicious after he shot down every single one of her options.

She had no idea how he knew exactly who was busy and who wasn’t.

She gave up helplessly and spoke her last resort, not knowing if he was free.

If he couldn’t go, she would ask Paul instead.

“Sure. Friday afternoon, right?”

“Mm.”

Zora turned to stare at him, studying his expression carefully.

She had a strong feeling he’d just been waiting for her to ask him.

“What are you looking at?”

Leighton realized he’d agreed way too quickly, and his expression turned slightly awkward.

“I feel like you’ve been waiting for me to ask you to go.

“Aren’t you super busy? All my other cousins are swamped with work, and you just came back from overseas. You should be even busier than them.”

The more she thought about it, the more she was sure she was right.

Zora had considered asking Leighton before, but she’d always thought he was too occupied.

She’d heard people say his career was booming and he had endless work to deal with.

The conference would take up an entire afternoon.

She often saw the light in his study still on late at night.

She always tried not to bother him with trivial stuff.

Most importantly, she’d heard he hated trouble the most.

She didn’t want to become another burden for him, even though she already troubled him a

lot.

Small things like this were never supposed to be one of them.

She’d only blurted out the suggestion on a whim, yet he’d agreed without hesitation.

His answer had been so smooth, like he’d practiced it hundreds of times, just waiting for her to speak up.

“You wanted me to go, didn’t you? Since you asked, how could I say no? When have I ever turned down any request from you?”

Leighton sat up straight, putting on a serious look as he realized she’d caught on.

“If you’re busy, I can still ask Paul,” Zora told him softly.

“I have time for your parent-teacher conference. I’ll make time even if I’m swamped.”

Leighton stood up to clear the plates, deliberately avoiding her words about finding someone else.

“You just wanted me to ask you to go, didn’t you?” Zora pressed him relentlessly.

Leighton ignored her question and held out his hand. “Give me your plate.”

“You could’ve just said you wanted to go from the start. You made me overthink everything and stress out for no reason.”

Zora handed him the plate, already seeing through his little scheme.

Wow. He’d gone in such big circles just to attend her parent-teacher conference.

She glared at him, cheeks puffed and annoyed.

Truly a cunning businessman. He’s amazing at mind games.

He could’ve just told her directly. Instead, he’d scared her into confessing all her little secrets, even the snack she’d snuck last night.

“You confessed your bad deeds on your own. Now you’re blaming me?” Leighton raised an eyebrow.

She always loved shifting the blame back on him.

Somehow he’d become the bad guy who bullied her.

“Hmph.” Zora let out a soft huff.

“Fine, it’s my fault. I won’t tease you like that again.”

Leighton smiled and gave in to her.

Her lively, bright expression filled his heart with warmth.

After resolving the issue, Zora’s good mood was fully back.

She was never one to hold grudges.

She propped her face in her hands, watching him clean the table, and rambled about school.

“You have no idea. Maya got full marks in Math, Foreign Language, Biology and Geography! I feel like someone stole all my brain cells.”

She thought Maya was absolutely incredible.

She felt so lucky to know someone so talented.

Zora felt no jealousy at all.

Maya studied nonstop every single day, so those perfect scores were totally well-deserved.

“You’re amazing too. You’re skilled in medical techniques and wonderful at playing the harp.

Leighton watched her chat excitedly, a deep sense of contentment spreading through his chest.
