Chapter 392 Years of Hidden Pain

All of Leighton’s fingernails were torn out. Two of his fingers were broken. They shaved off all his thick hair.

The drug dealers whipped his thin body over and over with spiked whips. There was not a single unhurt spot on him, just raw flesh and blood everywhere.

They pressed lit cigarette butts into his skin, and he could smell his own flesh burning.

Before he could get used to that terrible tearing pain, they dumped a bucket of saltwater all over his body.

After that, they held his head still and broke his calf with a steel pipe, forcing him to watch the whole thing.

They squeezed his neck until it turned dark purple, trying to threaten Vienne into giving up by hurting Leighton.

But when they saw Vienne still refused to give in, they finally stopped and spared his life for the time being.

Leighton knew what they were doing. They wanted him to cry and beg his mom to save him. They thought a mother would surrender to save her child.

But neither Vienne nor Leighton would ever let more innocent people or their country suffer just to save themselves.

If they’d given in, it wouldn’t only have cost them their lives. Dozens of other families would’ve been destroyed too.

Leighton bit his tongue until it was torn and bleeding, and never said a single word.

The dealers were cruel enough to beat and torture them, but they didn’t dare kill them.

If anything happened to Vienne or Leighton, Garrett would’ve hunted every last one of them down without mercy.

Watching each other get tortured and broken pushed both their minds to the breaking point.

They held on through the entire night.

For twelve straight hours, they endured every bit of pain.

Early the next morning, Garrett finally found them.

He had the whole abandoned building surrounded. The dealers knew they had no way out.

After a full night of torture, Leighton’s body went numb from the pain, and he passed out.

When he barely woke up, he saw he and Vienne were hanging in the air, along with all the kidnapped kids.

They were hanging 330 feet above the ground.

His head was fuzzy, but he clearly heard the dealers force Garrett to make a choice.

Either save the group of innocent kids who meant everything to dozens of families, or save him. and Vienne.

He heard Garrett choose the kids.

Right after, he heard Vienne’s rough voice beside him. “Don’t blame your dad, Leighton.”

Leighton wanted to tell her he didn’t blame him at all. His dad was a hero.

But he didn’t get the chance.

The second Garrett made his choice, the ropes holding them up snapped.

Leighton never fully figured out how he survived in the end.

All he remembered was the terrifying feeling of falling from the sky, with a sharp, unbearable pain in his heart.

It was a freezing winter. Cold, harsh wind cut across his cheeks.

He was barely alive. He’d always had a weak body as a kid, and he thought he was definitely going to die right then.

Strangely, his mind turned clear. He felt a pair of thin arms wrap tight around his waist. He knew it was Vienne.

Her hands were shaking badly as she slipped a pill into his mouth.

He opened his eyes and saw Vienne’s face, covered in blood.

All he could see was red.

Then she pulled him into her arms, holding him as tight as she could with every last bit of her strength.

She tried to shield him with her own body, doing everything to give him a chance to live.

Her weak, guilty voice whispered in his ear, “I’m so sorry, Leighton. Mom couldn’t protect you. Let’s be strong. Let’s fight to live.”

Foushed

Leighton told this long-buried story in a calm, steady voice.

He showed almost no emotion, but Zora’s chest stung sharply, like someone was sticking tiny needles into her heart.

She pressed her lips tight, her throat tight.

A deep, helpless sadness spread through her heart.

“Leighton…”

Leighton was the one telling the painful story, yet Zora’s voice sounded rougher and more broken than his.

Her heart hurt so bad.

She looked at the man next to her. He no longer sat tall and straight like usual. He leaned tiredly against the chair, looking worn out and lonely.

Leighton had never told anyone what really happened 17 years ago. Most people only knew a little of the truth.

Everyone knew he barely made it out alive. Broken fingers, no fingernails, a shattered calf, and his whole body covered in blood…

Even without knowing every detail, everyone felt terrible for him.

If just hearing the story hurt this much, no one could imagine the pain Leighton and Vienne had suffered through.

On the hospital bed, silent tears rolled down Garrett’s face and soaked into his pillow.

“Everyone thinks I hate him for choosing the kids over us,” Leighton said softly.

“But I don’t. I would’ve chosen the same thing. Those kids were the hope of dozens of families. My mom and I were never that important…”
