“What does this have to do with Zora? Wasn’t it Jolie who bought it?”

Anton was plagued by a splitting headache. At the mention of Zora by Mae, a wave of irritation rose sharply in his heart.

“Mr. Knox, the calming herbal tonic you’ve been drinking was given to us by Zora.” Mae frowned.

The calming herbal tonic Anton relied on was all provided by Zora.

No more of the herbs had come their way ever since Zora left.

“You’re talking out of your mind. That tonic was formulated by a famous doctor Jolie specially found for me.”

Anton knitted his brows tightly.

He had always believed Jolie had taken great pains to visit a renowned doctor just to get that prescription for him. He couldn’t understand why Mae would make up such a story, claiming it was Zora who supplied the calming tonic.

Zora was just a small-town girl. There was no way she could come by such effective calming medicine.

“Mr. Knox, we didn’t know Miss Jolie Knox had found a prescription for you, but the tonic you’ve been drinking has always been provided by Zora.” Mae wore a grave look.

None of the staff had ever gotten any instructions from Jolie to make the calming tonic for

Anton.

Staring at Mae’s earnest face, Anton lapsed into silence.

His mind was thrown into utter turmoil.

Mae was never the kind of person to tell lies.

Yet he could hardly bring himself to believe that the calming tonic he’d been drinking all along was made by Zora.

He was overwhelmed with shock.

It was Zora, not Jolie!

His pale, thin lips pressed tight together.

Recalling all the harsh ways he’d treated Zora before, Anton’s expression turned grim.

Had Zora secretly looked down on him all along, thinking him utterly clueless?

He had never imagined it was Zora behind everything.

The moment he learned the truth, he couldn’t help wondering why Jolie had claimed the credit as her own.

He’d wanted to ask Jolie about it, but she’d had a bad stomach all afternoon and gone to bed early, leaving him no chance to bring it up.

He had no choice but to hold back all his doubts.

He told himself it might just be another misunderstanding.

Jolie never lied. When he’d asked her where she got the herbs before, she’d said she’d pleaded with a famous doctor for the prescription.

She’d put in so much effort for it-how could he doubt her for no reason?

There must be some sort of misunderstanding behind this.

“Why did she make you keep this a secret from me?” His voice turned hoarse.

The calming tonic came from Zora, so why had she told Mae not to tell him?

A weird, tangled unease crept over Anton.

He couldn’t figure out why Zora would go out of her way to make the tonic for him.

Why would she ever be kind to him?

She’d always been petty and sensitive. Whenever the family showed favor to Jolie, she would give them the cold shoulder the very next day.

It made no sense that she’d prepare the calming tonic for him and even tell Mae to hide the truth.

He refused to believe Zora was simply being kind-hearted.

Deep down, Anton still couldn’t bring himself to trust her.

“Zora said you hate her. She knew you’d never drink the tonic if you found out it was from her,” Mae sighed softly.

“Mr. Knox, Zora has the kindest heart. Why can’t any of you see how good she truly is?”

Mae truly couldn’t understand it.

Zora was such a wonderful young lady, yet none of the family, not even Wendy, could see her worth.

Anton listened in silence, offering no reply.

He sat quietly on the sofa, his head throbbing violently. Zora’s calm, quiet eyes drifted into his mind.

It was clear she’d long grown disappointed with the Knox family.

Anton had no idea how he endured that agonizing night of endless headaches. The pain felt far worse than it ever had before.

In a daze, he seemed to see Zora’s figure standing far off in the distance. She tilted her head slightly, a faint smile playing on her lips-as if mocking him for failing to cherish her.

She was also disappointed that he couldn’t tell who’d truly been good to him all along.

Anton’s face drained of color.

He had no clue how he got through that endless, torturous night.

The next day, Jolie had school. After everything Mae had told him the night before, his eyes were bloodshot and his nerves worn thin. Even so, he still went to see Jolie off to Havenridge High School.

Zora would be heading to school too, he knew.

Pulling his wandering thoughts back, Anton fixed his gaze on Zora, his pale lips pressing into a thin line.

He’d come intending to uncover the truth, to talk to her properly. But now it was clear Zora wanted nothing to do with him.

He couldn’t accept that his long struggle with insomnia had been cured by the very sister he’d always disliked.

Yet once he faced the truth, a heavy wave of guilt washed over him.

Why had things fallen apart between them like this?

She had a stubborn temperament-why hadn’t the family just been more patient and understanding with her?

Why hadn’t they looked deeper into all those misunderstandings when they happened?

If they’d investigated back then, she would never have drifted so far apart from the Knox family.

Why hadn’t he taken the initiative to find out the truth?

When had he become the very kind of person he once hated-one who only trusted what he saw and believed idle gossip?

“Zora…”

Unconsciously, he loosened his grip on Jolie and called out to her in a hoarse voice.

Zora stared at him coldly, not responding in the slightest.
