But… she hadn’t been there.

Wendy could only watch helplessly as her daughter stared blankly after Holden and the others as they walked away.

Her heart ached like it was being torn open, a sharp throbbing pain draining all color from her face.

By the time the video ended, Wendy was in floods of tears, consumed by regret and agony.

She’d never imagined Zora had truly been misunderstood—and yet they’d all lashed out at her harshly. How brokenhearted must Zora have been?

She hadn’t even known Zora had fallen into the water that day.

When Holden had told her Jolie had drowned, she’d rushed straight to the hospital to look after her, completely oblivious that Zora had suffered the same fate right behind them.

Every student in the international program class had watched the whole incident unfold.

No one said a word.

The girls’ eyes were all glistening with tears.

Zora herself seemed unfazed by it all, while her classmates were seething with rage. They wanted nothing more than to grab Jolie and shake her hard.

How shameless could someone be?

To everyone, Zora was such a gentle, sweet girl-no one could have guessed what she’d endured in secret.

No wonder she seemed quiet and withdrawn. Bullied and misunderstood by her own family, how could anyone stay cheerful and upbeat through that?

Everyone looked at Zora, who was currently sprawled over her desk, reading a picture book. She propped up her chubby cheek with one hand, the soft flesh squishing together as her pale fingers absentmindedly pinched her own face.

She looked utterly adorable.

Her classmates felt a mix of heartache and amusement watching her.

She really was oblivious to it all.

After everything she’d been through, she never held it against Jolie. Instead, she’d quietly stepped back on her own. What a soft-hearted girl she was.

If it were any of them, they would never let Jolie get away so easily. They would claim what they were owed and never back down just to let Jolie have her way.

If anyone had to leave, it ought to be Jolie-not the innocent one giving way for someone else.

Raised in refined families, the students of the international program could see right through people’s hidden intentions.

“Zora…”

Easton, sitting in the row ahead of her, felt a tangled mess of emotions. He turned around, ready to comfort her.

But the moment he saw her calm, unbothered expression, his words died on his lips.

“Hm?” Zora turned the page of her storybook. The book had been given to her by Doris back in Maplewood, who’d been reluctant to part with it but finally let her have it anyway.

Zora had never gotten the chance to read it before. Now that she was at school, she could never focus in class, so she’d dug the book out of her small suitcase, where it had nearly gathered dust, and brought it to school.

As long as it wasn’t studying, Zora was happy to do anything.

Hearing the voice from the front row, Zora lifted her gaze.

“N-Nothing really… I just wanted to ask if you want some candy. It’s really good.”

Lost in Zora’s clear, pure eyes, Easton got the feeling she hadn’t let the Knox family’s drama bother her at all. He pulled a lollipop out of nowhere and held it out to her.

“Huh? Thank you.”

Zora stared at the candy with its pretty wrapper and took it. Then she rummaged around in her desk drawer, pulled out a box of chocolates, and handed it to him.

Easton was confused by her gesture.

He’d given her a treat, so why was she giving him one right back?

“Thank you for the candy. It’s only fair we exchange gifts.”

After picking up on Maya’s quiet way of communicating before, Zora felt she finally understood what their silence meant. She spoke with utterly sincere seriousness.

Jensen had taught her this-always return kindness when someone gives you something.

Easton couldn’t help but laugh at her earnest, matter-of-fact tone.

“Zora, can I make a little gift exchange with you too?”

Felix also turned to look at her, holding a pink cookie tin printed with a strawberry bear. A playful smile glinted in his narrow eyes as he teased her gently.

It was rare to meet someone so genuinely innocent.

“Do you want these?”

Zora dug around in her desk again and pulled out a bag of mixed nuts, tilting her head up to look at him.

“Sure,” Felix smiled at her straightforward sincerity, swapping his cookies for her bag of nuts.

Zora couldn’t figure out why they were both laughing.

She tucked the lollipop and cookies into her desk, then lowered her head to keep reading her storybook.

Beside her, Maya watched Zora’s carefree demeanor, the corners of her mouth tugging up a faint, soft smile.

Zora was actually pretty endearing.

Maya glanced up and made eye contact with the two boys in the front row. The three of them couldn’t hold back their laughter.

Zora was just too cute.

The study period soon ended, and the bell rang for break time. Zora pulled a pack of cookies out of her backpack, ready to take a bite-when a shadow suddenly fell over her desk.

She looked up to see Hallie standing right in front of her, her arms loaded with all kinds of snacks. Behind her stood several other girls, each carrying armfuls of treats as well.

All of them stared at Zora with unreadable expressions.

Zora had just torn open her cookie pack, not yet taken a bite. Feeling all those focused gazes on her, she blinked softly and asked, “Do you… want some too?”
