Chapter 8 Taken to the Marlow Manor

“Miss Knox, this won’t do! It’s five miles down the hill, and you still have a fever. Taxis don’t come out here. Your body won’t hold up if you try to walk it.”
Mae panicked.
Jensen frowned at her words.
The girl was trying to flee even while burning up with a fever.
“Where are you going? I’ll drive you.”
He looked at the stubborn girl. What’s gotten into her? She wants to leave the Knoxs already? She’s only been here two months! Did she suffer some wrong?
“No thanks.”
Zora took her bag from Mae and headed for the door.
Mae couldn’t go after her with Jensen there.
Without even setting foot inside the house, Jensen turned and followed Zora.
Mae watched, torn. Zora hated the Knoxs, and she barely knew Jensen, who was famously cold and avoided girls, even Jolie. There was no telling how they would get along.
She was worried sick, then rushed to find Tom for a car, just in case.
As she was walking, her phone rang.
She looked down-it was Holden.
She picked up.
Zora had no idea Mae was worrying about her.
She was annoyed that Jensen kept following.
“Zora, where are you going?”
Jensen watched her hurry, her short legs moving fast.
“None of your business. I don’t know you. Stop following me.”
Zora sounded impatient. He was so annoying.
“Mae just said I’m your cousin-your mom’s brother’s son. Since you don’t know me, let me introduce myself properly. I’m Jensen Marlow, your eldest cousin. Nice to meet you.”
He stepped in front and held out his hand.

Chapter 8 Taken to the Marlow Manor
“The Knox family has nothing to do with me. You don’t either. I don’t have cousins.”
Zora sidestepped him, her voice flat.
“Fighting with the family?”

Jensen could hear the indifference in her voice toward the Knox family.
“Mind your own business. Move.”
Her soft voice was sharp with anger. He was just as annoying as the Knoxs.
“If you don’t want to stay there, come with me to the Marlow house. I can’t let you leave alone. Grandma and Grandpa haven’t even met you.”
Jensen could guess. The girl really had fallen out with the Knox family.
He caught up to her, snatched the things she was carrying, and when Zora glared at him angrily, his expression turned serious.
He thought of Jolie, who had ulterior motives. His aunt and uncle were soft-hearted-they’d raised Jolie for over a decade, and they could never bear to let her go.
This girl had grown up in the countryside. With Jolie around, she could never fit into the Knox family overnight.
“Are you people ever going to quit? One’s trying to send me away, the other’s dragging me back. Do your two families even agree on anything?”
Zora reached to snatch her things back, but Jensen simply held them high above his head. She was too short -even jumping, she couldn’t reach.
She was furious. She already felt unwell, and being teased like this only made her angrier.
When Zora looked up, her delicate, beautiful but pale little face came into view. Jensen’s eyes flickered in surprise.
She really did look like his aunt.
But even more exquisite and striking than his aunt had been at her age.
Her cheeks were flushed from fever, adding a fragile tenderness that made his heart ache.
It was clear she’d been terribly wronged.
Zora had kept her head down before; Jensen had never seen her face properly.
He hadn’t even caught a glimpse of her at her birthday party yesterday.
His grandparents had been worried, especially after hearing Jolie had fallen into the water. They’d sent him to check on the Knoxs.
And the first thing he saw was Zora trying to leave.

Recalling her words about them sending her away. Jensen’s gaze turned cold.
His aunt’s family was being foolish. They’d finally found their long-lost daughter, yet instead of making it up to her, they wanted to get rid of her.
“Zora, if you don’t want to stay with the Knoxs, you don’t have to. Come with me to the Marlow family.”
Jensen suppressed his quiet anger, his voice softening as he soothed the upset girl.
The Knoxs had raised Jolie for over a decade; they wouldn’t abandon her anytime soon. The one who would always suffer was the newly returned girl, still a stranger to them.
“No. I’m not going back to the Knoxs, and I’m not going to your Marlow family either. Give me my things, or I’ll call the police.”
Zora refused coldly.
The man before her was devastatingly handsome, with sharp, deep features. The way he softened his tone to coax her could easily make someone lower their guard.
But unfortunately for him, he was dealing with Zora, who had been raised and pampered by a mentor as beautiful as a literal deity.
Ordinary men could never sway her heart.
“Zora, I promise you. At the Marlow family, no one will ever bully you again. I’ll protect you. Grandpa and Grandma miss you terribly-they talk about you every day. Won’t you come see them?”
Jensen bent slightly, meeting her eyes levelly.
He coaxed the little hedgehog.
Zora frowned, remembering the kind old couple she’d met when she first arrived at the Knoxs.
The old woman had taken her hand, asked gently if she’d suffered all those years, and pressed a diamond pendant into her palm.
“Zora, if you want to move out, you need to find a place first, right? Let’s go back to the Marlow Manor for a while. You can keep Grandma company. And you can take your time looking for a place you like.
“Grandma hasn’t been well lately. She thinks about you nonstop. Zora, won’t you really go see her?”
Jensen noticed she hesitated at the mention of their grandmother, Opal Marlow.
“I’ll visit Grandma, then I’m leaving.”
Opal was the first person who’d been kind to her since she came to Seacrest. Hearing she was unwell, Zora felt a flicker of worry. She cherished anyone who showed her kindness.
“Alright.”
One way or another, he’d get her home first. They could talk about her leaving later. He couldn’t let the feverish Zora go off alone.

If she didn’t want to stay with the Knoxs, he’d take her back to the Marlow Manor.
Zora fell silent.
“My car is just ahead. Come with me.” Jensen filled the quiet.
Zora said nothing, just followed him.
Anyway, she’d leave right after visiting her grandmother.
Jensen glanced at the quiet Zora and sighed inwardly.
He had no idea how much his aunt’s family had hurt this girl.
