Chapter 83 A Treat Worth Savoring
No ordinary person could hold a candle to her mentor’s cooking skills.
Zora had grown utterly spoiled by that homemade flavor.

After moving into the Knox Villa, her appetite had faded. The household stuck to plain, mild dishes, and even desserts were strictly portioned with controlled ingredients to prioritize health above all else.
Zora never really took to the meals there.
It was not that the food tasted bad, but knowing even baked treats came with rigid rules on ingredients and portions dulled both the flavor and her craving.
These pumpkin pastries, though, were perfect in her eyes.
She’d already made up her mind to come to this little diner as often as she could.
There were only eight pastries in total across two plates, four to each serving.
With five of them, they each took one, leaving only three left. Zora felt too shy to take more than her share.
She planned to order two more portions later just for herself to satisfy her craving.
“Of course you can have more, Zora. I’ll ask Sarah to make you two fresh plates right after she’s free,” Easton agreed without hesitation.
“Really? Thank you so much.”

Zora’s eyes lit up, like a delicate little stray cat that had just gotten its favorite treat, unable to hide how delighted she was.
Watching her bright smile, Easton’s ears flushed faintly pink. “I’ll go talk to her right now.”
He hurried off in a rush.
“Take this whole plate for yourself. We’ll share the other one.” Felix slid one full plate over toward Zora.
“Absolutely, Zora, keep this plate all to yourself. We’ll just try a bite from the other,” Hallie chimed in, then glanced at Maya. “You don’t mind us splitting the other one, right?”
“Sure.” Maya nodded quietly in agreement.
Joy practically radiated from Zora’s face, clear for everyone to see.

“Is that really okay…?” Zora hesitated, feeling awkward about taking the whole plate.

Finched
“There’s no need to be shy. We’re all close friends here-no formal rules between us,” Hallie smiled and gently pinched her cheek.
None of them cared much for sweet baked goods anyway, while Zora clearly loved them. They would have ordered more for her if the diner still had any left.
“Thank you,” Zora smiled warmly at them, her eyes crinkling with happiness.
Her simple, genuine joy made the others smile too. It took so little to make her happy-just a plate of pastries was enough to light up her whole mood.
The rest of them tried the second plate, leaving one pastry set aside for Easton.
“This really is amazing,” Hallie commented after taking a bite.
Maya savored hers slowly and nodded in quiet agreement.
“Zora, I talked to Sarah already. She’ll make two fresh plates for you once she’s finished with the other orders.” Easton soon returned, carrying another dish in his hands.
“If you love my pastries, I’ll make them fresh once you’re done with your meal.” Sarah followed closely behind him, also holding a platter.
It was a big bowl of spicy fish stew.
“Thank
you, Sarah,” Zora spoke softly, her voice gentle with gratitude.

“It’s my pleasure. Seeing you enjoy my cooking is the best compliment I could ask for,” Sarah smiled fondly at Zora’s sweet, well-mannered face.
“Take your time eating, and call if you need anything else.”
After setting the spicy fish stew down, Sarah brought out four more dishes before heading back to the kitchen: seasoned pork skillet, creamy tomato egg bake, herb beef sauté, and sweet corn pork rib chowder.
The portions were generous, more than enough for the five of them.
“It may not have the fancy plating you get at upscale restaurants, but the flavor’s absolutely amazing. That seasoned pork skillet is great. You guys have to try it.”
Easton then took a piece of the spicy fish stew. Rich and hearty with a bold, savory kick, the tender fish simmered in spiced broth, filling the air with warm, fragrant aroma.
“This is so good. Just watch out for bones, though-this isn’t the boneless fish we usually get.”

“If everyone says it’s good, it’s gotta be incredible,” Hallie said, taking a bite of the fish stew herself.
The second the flavor hit her tongue, her eyes lit up.
“Zora, you gotta try this. It looks spicy, but it’s mostly just full of great flavor,” Hallie urged her warmly.
“Okay.” Zora swallowed the last bite of her pumpkin pastry. Still she didn’t reach for the fish. She picked at the other dishes instead, her gaze drifting back to the stew again and again, yet she hesitated to take any for herself.
“There shouldn’t be any bones in this part.”
Maya picked up her fork, took a tender piece from the fish belly, carefully picked out any small bones, and set it gently on Zora’s plate.
The others all glanced over.
“I… I got stuck on a fish bone once before, so I never really eat fish anymore,” Zora admitted shyly under their gaze, staring down at the fish on her plate.
She loved the taste of fish, but she never knew how to pick out the tiny bones.
Back when she lived out in the countryside with her mentor, he’d often cook fish for her to stay healthy, always picking out every bone beforehand.
Once, she’d eaten a type of local pan fish at a neighbor’s house-known for having tons of fine little bones. Even after being extra careful picking through it, she’d still ended up with a bone stuck in her throat.
