Chapter 90 The Silent Choice Left Unmade

“Mom, Zora is my daughter. How could I ever not want her?”

Wendy stared at her mother in shock.

It was clear Opal intended to have Zora officially join the Marlow family for good.

“Grandma, things haven’t gotten that serious.” Anton rose to his feet in a rush, stunned by Opal’s unyielding tone. “Zora was finally returned to us after all these years…”

He had never been particularly close to Zora, yet it had never crossed his mind to disown his own sister.

“Not serious?” Opal glanced calmly at their flustered faces, a faint knowing smile playing on her lips. “You can’t bring yourselves to make a choice, so I’ll make it for you. You said you’re fine with Zora staying here—we’ve taken wonderful care of her all along.”

So now they’re in a hurry?

Anton fell silent.

He could feel the quiet disapproval in Opal’s eyes.

“Zora is our treasure here at the Marlow Manor,” Opal said evenly. “Jolie is your treasure at the Knox Villa. If you don’t cherish Zora, step aside and let us love her the way she deserves.”

Her words left no room for doubt-Zora was not unwanted.

The Knox family treated her like an afterthought, but to the Marlows, she was priceless.

They did not value her, yet plenty of others would.

“Zora, I’m not giving up on you.” Wendy turned to Zora, her gaze pleading. “Give me a little more time, and I’ll fix everything between you and Jolie.”

The thought of giving up her own flesh and blood had never crossed her mind. She had carried Zora for nine months; she could never abandon her daughter.

“I’m never going back to the Knox Villa.”

Zora met her begging eyes and spoke firmly, every word clear and unwavering.

“Zora, are you going to push me too?”

Wendy’s eyes welled up with tears, hurt and helpless.

“You’re the ones who chose to let me go.”

Flashed

Zora could not understand why Wendy looked at her with such tearful sorrow.

She was the one who had been cast aside.

Wendy’s hesitation spoke volumes. She could not make up her mind-not for Zora, but for Jolie. Even the thought of letting Jolie move out alone tore at her heart. Jolie had never been away from her side. She was terrified that Jolie might suffer even a hint of discomfort out in the world.

She would never give Jolie up.

Which meant Zora was the one left abandoned.

Eventually, Wendy left.

Unable to make her choice, she had quietly let Zora slip away from her.

Realizing this left a dull ache throbbing in Zora’s chest. She had seen this coming all along, yet when the moment finally arrived, the pain still stung.

Once again, she had been abandoned.

Her mentor was gone, and now her blood relatives had cast her aside too.

“Zora? Are you in here? Can I come in?”

Jensen returned to the Marlow Manor after finishing work at the company. Not finding Zora in the living room, he only saw Opal and Floyd looking worn out and sighing heavily.

After a quick briefing on what had happened, his face darkened. He composed himself and headed upstairs.

“Come in, Jensen.”

A quiet, muffled voice came from inside the room. Jensen’s shoulders tensed slightly. He turned the doorknob and stepped inside.

The room was warm and tidy.

White sheer curtains fluttered gently in the breeze drifting through the window. The room was

empty.

Jensen scanned the space and spotted her sitting on a hanging chair on the balcony, legs swinging slowly, her back turned toward him.

He pressed his lips together, softening into a gentle smile as he walked over. In his hand, he held a cotton candy decorated with tiny blue blossoms.

“Jensen.”

Zora turned at the sound of his footsteps. A faint, sweet smile tugged at her lips when she saw the refined, calm young man.

An open workbook lay on the small table before her, left untouched for quite a while.

Beyond her stretched a sweeping sky of fiery sunset clouds, bathing her small frame in a lonely golden glow.

The sky blazed bright and vivid, yet the girl sitting beneath it looked tiny and alone, with no one standing beside her.

Jensen’s heart twisted sharply, a sharp twinge of sorrow spreading through his chest.

He hurried over, pulled up a small stool across from her, and held out the cotton candy, his eyes warm and indulgent.

“Where did you get this?” Zora’s quiet eyes lit up at the sight of the treat.

“I asked the chef to make it special,” Jensen smiled softly.

“Thank you, Jensen.” Zora stared at the delicate cotton candy, hesitant to take a bite.

It was pale sky-blue with a soft yellow center, decorated with tiny drawn eyes, a button nose, and an upturned smiling mouth, dusted with shimmering sugar crystals.

Enormous in size-nearly twice the size of her head-it looked impossibly lovely enough to lift anyone’s mood.

“If you like it, I’ll have the chef make you another later,” Jensen said, reading her quiet delight easily.

“Mhm.” Zora looked down at the cotton candy and took a small bite.

Sweetness spread gently across her tongue, melting away the quiet sorrow lingering in her heart.
