The Rejected Principessa Returns novel Chapter 63

Chapter 6

I gave a soft laugh and muttered to myself, “Guess that makes me the fool.”

Time passed quickly.

Three months later, the ceasefire agreement was finally signed, and we were ordered to withdraw from the

war zone.

When I returned, Maggie was the first to drag me out for dinner. But the moment she saw me, her eyes went

red.

“Oh my God, Savannah, what happened to you?” she cried. “You weren’t exactly chubby before, but now you’re all bones and sunburn.”

She fussed over me the entire walk to the restaurant, promising to feed me until I looked human again.

What I didn’t expect, though, was the man waiting at our reserved table.

Maggie beamed with mischief. “This is Gabe-my brother. He just got back, too, so I figured we could all

catch up.”

She kept wiggling her eyebrows, not even trying to hide her intentions.

I gave her a tired smile, already resigned to the setup.

Before I could say anything, Gabe spoke first.

“We’ve met,” he said simply. “No need for introductions. Let’s order.”

Maggie gasped, clapping her hands in delight. “Well, that’s perfect! Means you’ll have plenty to talk about.”

Gabe shot her a look, then turned to me with a faint shrug. “Don’t mind her. She gets a little too enthusiastic

sometimes.”

Then, just like before, he pushed a freshly rinsed fork in front of me. The gesture was small, but it made something tighten in my chest.

I remembered the chaos of that camp-how clean water was a luxury, and fights broke out every morning.

just to claim a bucket.

I’d fallen once trying to reach it, twisted my wrist in the stampede.

It was Gabe who pulled me out.

And from then on, I’d wake to find a full bucket waiting outside my tent-no questions asked.

Now, back in the safety of a restaurant, that same quiet thoughtfulness caught me off guard.

Maggie, of course, noticed everything. She narrowed her eyes, leaning forward with a grin. “Savannah… you

and Gabe…”

But before she could finish, another voice cut across the restaurant.

“There you are!”

It was full of stunned joy and something desperate beneath it.

I turned toward the voice, already knowing who it belonged to.

Callum stood a few feet away, eyes locked on mine like he was afraid I’d vanish again.

Before I could move, he was already walking toward me. “You’re safe. Thank God. I’ve been looking

everywhere. Savannah, you have no idea how hard it’s been without you…”

“Wait a damn minute.”

Maggie shot to her feet, furious and incredulous. “Wait, Callum, you’re saying all this… and your wife is

standing right behind you?”

Behind him, Eliza stood silently, face pale, eyes glossy with unshed tears. She looked like she couldn’t

breathe.

Callum, who once couldn’t stand to see her shed a single tear, now didn’t even look back. Instead, he replied without hesitation, “Savannah is my wife. What’s inappropriate about that?”

Maggie’s eyes widened in shock. “What?! Are you kidding me? Isn’t Eliza your wife?”

Gabe, who already knew the truth, showed no reaction.

Callum no longer tried to hide it. His voice was steady, almost solemn. “Savannah and I are legally married. We’ve been husband and wife for years.”

Maggie turned to me, suspicion clouding her expression. I let out a weary sigh, then nodded. “It’s true. But we’re getting divorced. That’s why I never told you.”

Callum’s face went pale. The word seemed to knock the air out of him. He looked stunned, his smile faltering

into something brittle.

“Savannah, come on. That’s not funny. We’re fine-why would you even mention divorce?”

I met his gaze, then looked toward Eliza, standing quietly behind him.

“Really? You don’t know why?”

“Her due date must be soon-eight months, at least. Once the baby’s born, you’ll need a birth certificate. And for that you’ll need a marriage license.”
