Chapter 9
I could see how much he still cared about Eliza.
So I pulled out the divorce papers I had prepared long ago and pressed forward.
“Callum,” I said calmly, “what she wants is a clear answer from you. These are the papers. Sign them, and
give her peace of mind.”
Gabe, ever the gentleman, handed over his pen.
“She’s carrying your child. Their lives are in your hands now. So what’s your choice going to be?”
Eliza looked at him with teary eyes full of hope, not blinking once.
Callum froze.
He trembled slightly, eyes filled with pain as he looked at me. “Savannah… why are you forcing me too?”
“Why do you think?” I snapped. “The moment you betrayed our marriage, this became inevitable. Now sign it
and get it over with.”
He hesitated.
Eliza’s body swayed dramatically, and he panicked.
Without thinking, he snatched the papers and scribbled his name.
Then he rushed to her, arms outstretched.
“It’s done, Eliza. I’ve signed. Please-just come down.”
I glanced at the signature. Then gave her a nod.
Callum helped her off the ledge with trembling hands, relief flooding his face.
She collapsed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
Surprisingly, all I felt was peace.
I had finally rewritten my story. Finally won my freedom.
A smile tugged at my lips, but tears slipped down anyway.
Gabe’s voice cut in, cold and sharp. “What’s this? Regret already? Thinking twice about the divorce?”
I wiped the tears away and smiled into the sunlight.
“Not regret,” I said lightly. “I’m just… happy. So happy I could cry.”
Callum didn’t dare wait too long. With Eliza’s emotions on edge, he rushed the process.

The very next day, we went to City Hall and made it official.
As we stepped out into the daylight, Callum looked pale and worn.
He gave a crooked smile. “I’m sorry, Savannah. For breaking my promise, for hurting you. I hope you find
happiness. I really do.”
I accepted his words, then turned toward his car-where Eliza was waiting-and walked away without looking
back.
When I got in the car, Gabe handed me a bouquet of roses. “Congratulations,” he said. “On your new life.”
“Thank you.”
Because really, for the girl I once was, this was a new life.
Soon after, I joined my team again for another rescue operation.
Between deployments, Maggie would call often, always full of updates and gossip.
This time, her voice was practically shaking with excitement.
“You won’t believe this-Eliza just gave birth to a baby girl. But guess what? Callum hired a new assistant
who looks just like you!”
I raised an eyebrow, already unimpressed.
“They’re having some steamy affair apparently. Eliza’s been storming into his office with the baby, crying and causing scenes. It’s gotten so bad, even the company’s been affected.”
She paused, then added with a guilty laugh, “Oh, and, um… I may have accidentally spilled everything about you and Callum during a drunk night out.”
“Our whole little friend group found out. No one’s talking to Callum anymore-they even disbanded the group
chat!”
I let out a small laugh.
I didn’t care what they were doing now. Their drama was no longer my burden.
I had set them free. What they did with that freedom was their business-not mine.
Gabe crouched beside me, carefully brushing mud off my boots.
His tone was soft but serious. “Next time you head off to a war zone, promise you’ll take me with you.
You don’t get to scare me like that again.”
I tore off a bite of dry flatbread and nodded without looking up.
“Yeah, yeah. Got it.”

Maggie’s voice rang out teasingly through the satellite phone. “Savannah, should I start calling you
‘sister-in-law’ now?”
I glanced sideways at Gabe, who was clearly waiting for my answer.
My smile deepened. “Well… that depends on someone’s performance.”
The road ahead was long-but we had time. Plenty of it.
