“They went through all that trouble; there’s no way they’re giving anything back. What do you think this is, a joke?”
“True.” Tessa agreed.
That old scumbag Dale was probably about to lose his mind.
“I’m just curious,” Stella said. “If Dale’s not your dad, then who is? I’ve seen pictures of him–your eyes look exactly like his.”
There was a resemblance, but now that Diana had said Tessa wasn’t his daughter, they were inclined to believe her.
‘How would I know?” Tessa huffed. “My mom wouldn’t say!”
Hearing the hint of gossip in Stella’s voice, Tessa pouted.
‘Whoever it is,” Stella said dryly, “as long as it’s not that old scumbag, it’s fine by me.”
After all these years, they’d seen plenty of awful men–but a man who knew he had a child and still refused to acknowledge them? That was a new low.
‘Exactly,” Tessa muttered.
‘Hey, enough about me,” she added quickly. “You’d better watch out for the Tom family! And does this have anything to do with Mr. Derrick?”
‘What would it have to do with him? Derrick cut ties with the Tom family a long time ago.”
It clearly had nothing to do with Derrick.
But the fact that Reese turned out to be Mona’s daughter–that, Stella hadn’t seen coming at all.
No wonder Mona had never once visited Kelly all these years.
She’d always said she felt sorry for her daughter, but when Kelly was sent away, Mona never went to see her–not even once.
At first, everyone assumed she was afraid of the Dawson family and didn’t dare.
But the Dawsons had never forbidden the Toms from acknowledging Kelly!
And still, Mona had stayed away. So Kelly was never her biological daughter to begin with—Reese was.
“Then Reese… is she Mr. Tom’s biological daughter?” Tessa asked.
“Definitely not,” Stella replied without hesitation.
If she were, Mona wouldn’t have hidden her away all these years. The fact that this was coming to light now only meant that Mona had been secretly keeping in touch with Reese all along.

“If she really were his child, she’d have been brought into the Tom family ages ago. Why raise her in secret?”
“Good point. This whole thing’s just insane,” Tessa said.
Tessa sounded completely exasperated.
Stella, however, was unfazed. “Families in Falvaria–most of the big ones–are all like this.”
Each one messier than the last.
They chatted for a few more minutes before hanging up.
When Stella put down her phone and turned around, Melissa was sitting there with a cup of coffee in her hand.
As soon as Stella ended the call, Melissa set her cup down and asked, “Is that enough information to buy peace for my family–the Bogdens?”
Stella held her belly and walked over to sit across from her.
Melissa looked at her earnestly. “Stella, that pregnancy test wasn’t mine. I’m convinced it was Reese’s.”
Reese. The name wasn’t unfamiliar to Stella.
And the person who had just brought her this information–was Melissa.
Stella picked up the photo lying on the table and studied it. The woman in the picture was leaving a cosmetic surgery clinic.
The shot was taken from a distance, but even so, Stella could tell immediately–the woman already looked more than halfway like her.
“When I saw that,” Melissa said quickly, “I started digging. She’s been copying you in everything–your clothes, your hairstyle. Look for yourself.”
“I can see it.”
The fashion choices, the haircut–it was all exactly her style.
Looking at the photos, Stella had almost mistaken them for herself.
“She looks so much like me…”
She hadn’t expected this–the Tom family had another scheme running behind the scenes. No, not the Tom family; Mona did.
“She really is Mona’s daughter?” Stella asked.
“Guaranteed. They’ve been hiding it well. I only found out because I happened to spot them when I was shopping in Hamlin and snapped these photos. After that, Reese started covering herself up every time
