When it came to arguments, Tessa had plenty of experience–back wi Stella, she’d seen her fair share of loud, messy fights.
So facing this kind of confrontation now, she knew exactly what to do.
When people threw insults, you just hurled them right back; that was the rule.

And Lina–already on the verge of exploding over the paternity test–was pushed straight over the edge.
Tessa’s words hit her right where it hurt most.
“You wench-”
“Me? What exactly makes me that? You can’t even say, can you? But you–once that paternity test comes back and it proves you’re not his kid, then it’s not just you who’s trash; your mom’s right there with you.”
Lina went silent.
Tessa’s sharp words hit so hard that Lina hung up in a fury.
Hearing the dial tone, Tessa let out a derisive scoff. “Can’t win the argument, so you hang up? Typical.”
Victor had finished his own call by then.
He tossed his phone aside and turned to look at her.
Tessa met his gaze. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Lina ran away.”
Tessa froze. Ran away? The same Lina who couldn’t win a shouting match just now–she ran? Wait… seriously?
“Then she’s definitely not Dale’s daughter.”
If she were, she wouldn’t have had to run. Take the test and get it over with; what was the point

fleeing?
By running, she’d basically confirmed everyone’s doubts–real daughter or not, no one would believe it now.
“Hold on.” Tessa said suddenly. “With Mrs. Morley’s influence in R she couldn’t tamper with the test results if she wanted to? Would s daughter so far that she’d run away?”
are you telling me push her own
After all, with something like a paternity test, there were plenty of ways to meddle; it wasn’t like the results came out instantly. If someone wanted to pull strings, they had time.
Victor frowned slightly, his brow creasing. “What if,” he said slowly, “there’s no way to tamper with it at all?”
“Huh?” Tessa blinked. No way to tamper with it? What did that mean? Wait–did he mean Artemis never had Dale’s children in the first place?
“That doesn’t make sense,” she said. “Didn’t she have three? The twins, and then one more?”
Could it be that even Manny–the son–wasn’t Dale’s either?
No way… or maybe there is. A shiver ran up Tessa’s spine as she looked at Victor.
This was-
“Uh…”
What am I even supposed to say? Tessa thought.
Honestly, if Artemis really had the power to manipulate results, and yet things had come to this… then maybe Victor was right; maybe she’d never given birth to any of Dale’s children at all.
Tessa’s mind spun round and round until she finally blurted, “That’s just tragic.”
“His first love gave birth three times, he waited on her hand and foot through two months of recovery each time–and not one of those kids was his!”
Victor went quiet.
Her words left him speechless.
And if you thought about it that way… Dale really was more than a little pitiful.
“Wait a second-”

Victor sighed. “What now?”
“My mom called me earlier,” Tessa said. “She told me I’m not his c

Victor just stared at her. She got a call from her mom and didn’t even mention it?
Apparently, in the few hours he’d been gone, Tessa’s life had turne
down.
