Bethany’s hand tightened slightly at her side.

I saw it.

And I knew others did too.

The pressure in the hall increased.

I could feel it clearly now. This was no longer a matter of control.

It was a matter of decision.

The elder spoke again.

“There is a simple resolution,” he said. “If the Bloodline Verification Rite is performed, the truth will be confirmed.”

He paused.

“If the claim is false, your position will be strengthened.”

His gaze held mine.

“If it is true, then the council will act accordingly.”
