Chapter 212 Debts That Never Disappear

Chapter 212: Debts That Never Disappear

Amorah POV

Bethany was already waiting in the sitting room when Conrad finished explaining what security had found. The moment I walked into the room, I saw the fear on her face.

She knew exactly why she had been called. Conrad stood near the fireplace with a tablet in his hand.

Several security reports rested on the table beside him. Bethany looked from him to me.

“I didn’t do it.”

That was the first thing she said. Nobody responded immediately.

The silence stretched long enough to make her uncomfortable. For once, I found myself appreciating that.

“I didn’t contact anyone.”

Her voice became more desperate.

“Someone is setting me up.”

I sat across from her without breaking eye contact.

“You’ve said that before.”

The reminder landed exactly the way I intended. Bethany looked away first.

Years ago, I probably would have argued. I probably would have demanded explanations and evidence.

Now I simply felt tired. Tired of excuses.

Tired of lies. Tired of watching people pretend their actions had never happened.

Conrad placed the tablet on the table.

“Your name appears in the messages.”

Bethany immediately leaned forward.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

Her answer came too quickly.

“It proves someone used my name.”

I laughed softly. The sound surprised everyone in the room.

It surprised me too. Bethany frowned.

“What is funny?”

I folded my arms.

“You spent years making sure nobody believed me.”

The room became silent again. Now Bethany understood where this conversation was heading.

“When I told people what you were doing, nobody listened.”

My voice remained calm.

“When I warned people about your lies, nobody listened.”

Bethany opened her mouth. I cut her off immediately.

“No.”

She froze. For the first time in years, I had no interest in hearing another explanation from her.

“You’ve had enough chances.”

The words came out colder than I intended. Maybe colder than I cared about.

Bethany lowered her eyes.

“I know I hurt you.”

I shook my head. That sentence barely scratched the surface.

“Hurt me?”

The bitterness slipped through before I could stop it.

“You tried to destroy my life.”

Nobody interrupted. Even Conrad remained silent.

Bethany looked miserable.

Good.

For years, I had been expected to move forward while carrying consequences created by someone else’s choices. I was finished pretending those choices had not mattered.

“You helped isolate me.”

Her shoulders stiffened.

“You helped spread lies about me.”

The room felt smaller with every sentence.

“You helped Holmes humiliate me.”

Bethany swallowed hard. Each accusation landed because none of them were false.

I stood slowly.

“You don’t get forgiveness because you’re struggling.”

Her eyes widened. Apparently she had hoped for something different.

Apparently she still believed enough time could erase everything. It could not.

“I don’t want revenge the way you

My voice softened slightly.

“I don’t want you hurt.”

think.”

That part was true. The woman sitting across from me had already ruined enough lives.

Watching her suffer would not fix mine.

“I want accountability.”

Bethany looked confused. The concept probably sounded unfamiliar.

“For once, I want the truth to matter.”

Nobody spoke afterward. There was nothing left to say.

The conversation ended soon after that. Bethany remained under supervision while security continued reviewing communications.

I left feeling strangely lighter. Not happier.

Not satisfied. Just lighter.

Some wounds stopped healing when people kept pretending they never existed.

Later that afternoon, life inside the estate continued as usual. Cassian made sure of that.

Little Fang had recently discovered how to pull himself upright using furniture. Unfortunately, he had not learned how to sit back down safely.

I caught him attempting the same dangerous maneuver three times in ten minutes.

‘Absolutely not*

Cassian smiled at me. The smile looked suspiciously proud.

“Don’t look pleased with yourself.”

His response was a delighted laugh. That laugh immediately ruined my attempt to sound strict.

A few minutes later, Kyra appeared carrying a stack of academy materials. She looked distracted.

“Training again?”

I nodded toward the papers.

She groaned dramatically.

“I think the instructors enjoy making us suffer.”

The complaint sounded familiar. I remembered saying similar things at her age.

“That bad?”

Kyra dropped into a chair.

“Worse.”

She pointed toward the papers.

“Zane says it’s fine.”

I laughed.

“Zane lies,”

Her expression brightened immediately.

“Exactly.”

The agreement improved her mood considerably.

Not long afterward, Zane entered the room carrying training equipment. His confidence continued growing every week.

Unfortunately, so did his attitude.

“I heard that.”

Kyra grinned.

“You were supposed to.”

The argument began immediately. I allowed it.

Most of the time, their arguments lasted only a few minutes before turning into normal conversation again. Watching them reminded me how quickly they were growing.

The realization felt both comforting and unsettling.

That evening, Conrad remained focused on the communications investigation. He spent hours reviewing reports with security specialists.

When he finally joined me, exhaustion showed clearly on his face.

“Any progress?”
