Amorah laughed softly. The sound made something twist painfully inside my chest.

I kept staring at her without meaning to. Eventually Kyra noticed.

“Why do you keep looking at her?” she asked.

I nearly choked on my drink. Amorah glanced toward me immediately.

“I wasn’t looking.”

“You absolutely were”

I rolled my eyes. “Mind your business.”

Kyra grinned. “That means I was right.”

Amorah shook her head while smiling. For a moment, everything felt normal.

That should have made me feel better. Instead, the strange feeling only got stronger.

Later that afternoon, Kyra forced me upstairs to help finish decorating the baby’s room. Apparently this had become the most important mission in the territory

“You’ve been avoiding this room all week,” she accused

“I’ve been busy”

“You’ve been hiding.”

I sighed heavily, “You’re annoying”

She smiled proudly. “Thank you”

When we entered the nursery, Conrad stood beside a partially assembled bookshelf.

The instruction manual was upside down in his hands.

I stared at him. He stared back at me. Neither of us spoke for several seconds. Finally, I pointed at the shelf “It’s backwards.”

Conrad frowned. “No, it isn’t.”

Kyra immediately walked around it. Then she pointed at the back panel facing the room.

“Yes, it is.”

Conrad looked at the shelf. Then he looked at us.

Then he looked at the shelf again.

“Oh.”

That only made her laugh harder. Kyra joined in immediately. Even I couldn’t stop smiling

For several minutes, nobody talked about bloodlines or missing records. Nobody talked about Holmes or succession conflicts.

We were just a family preparing for a baby. The realization hit me harder than I expected.

That evening, rain tapped softly against the windows. The weather had grown colder over the past few weeks.

Time was moving forward. The baby was growing. Everything was changing.

After dinner, Kyra proudly unveiled handmade bracelets she had made for the baby. Most of them looked like they would fall apart within minutes.

“They’re beautiful,” Amorah said anyway.

Kyra beamed instantly. “I knew you’d understand.”

“They’re crooked,” I pointed out.

“They’re artistic.”

“They’re crooked.”

Conrad wisely stayed out of the argument.

Later, Kyra decided the baby needed musical education. She pressed her ear against Amorah’s stomach while holding a playlist on her tablet.

“I wasn’t that bad.”

“You were exactly that bad,” Kyra replied.

Even Amorah was laughing now. Her entire face looked brighter than it had in days.

Watching her smile felt strangely important. More important than I could explain.

That night, after everyone went to bed, I couldn’t sleep. The photograph kept returning to my thoughts. Eventually, I slipped into Conrad’s office.

Soon I found exactly what was looking for

An inventory photograph from Amorah’s old storage boxes. The same stuffed wolfsat inside.

I stared at the screen in disbelief. It couldn’t be a coincidence anymore

My wolf became restless Strange memories stated pushing against the edge of my mind again.

A vehicle moving through darkness. A warm scent. Someone holding me.

I squeezed my eyes shut. The memory disappeared before I could grab hold of it.

“Damn it”

My voice sounded too loud inside the empty office.

I reopened the photograph showing young Amorah standing beside the twins. This time I stared directly at her face.

A sudden memory flashed across my mind. A girl kneeling beside me, Gentle hands fixing a blanket.

A stuffed wolf toy being pressed into my arms. Then darkness. My heart slammed against my ribs. The memory vanished instantly. But the feeling remained.

I wasn’t looking at a stranger in that photograph. I wasn’t even looking at a distant relative.

I was looking at someone my wolf remembered. My hands tightened against the desk.

Then another memory surfaced. A frightened child crying. A girl’s voice promising everything would be okay.

The scent i now associated with Amorah. I stopped breathing. The memory disappeared again. But it had already revealed enough.

The transport logs said three children traveled together. The photographs proved young Amorah had been there. The stuffed wolf connected all of us. And for the first time, a terrifying possibility formed clearly inside my mind.

I didn’t think Amorah had simply traveled beside us. I thought I had met her before. Long before either of us remembered clearly
