The note remained clenched in Zane’s hand the entire drive home from the academy. He barely spoke during the trip, and even Kyra seemed to understand that something serious had happened.

The moment we returned to the estate, Zane asked to speak with Conrad and me privately. The request alone was enough to make me put the baby down and follow him immediately.

We gathered in Conrad’s office while Kyra waited outside with obvious frustration. Zane closed the door behind him before unfolding the note and placing it on the desk.

Neither Conrad nor I spoke immediately. We simply read the message together.

“I didn’t write it,” Zane said quickly. “And I don’t know who left it.”

“We know,” Conrad replied.

Zane looked relieved by the answer, but only slightly. The note still sat between us like something much heavier than a few written words.

“I figured whoever left it wanted me to see it,” Zane said. “So I thought you should see it too.”

I felt a strange mix of emotions as I looked at him. Not long ago he would have tried handling something like this himself.

Now he had come directly to us. That mattered more than he probably realized.

Conrad folded the note and placed it aside. His expression remained calm, but I knew him well enough to recognize the

concern beneath it..

“Did anyone see you open it?” he asked.

Zane shook his head. “Not that I noticed.”

Conrad nodded thoughtfully. “Good.”

The room fell quiet for a moment. I could tell Zane wanted answers, but he wasn’t sure how to ask the question that mattered most.

Finally, he looked directly at me.

“Is it true?”

The question hit harder than the note itself. Not because I was surprised, but because I had known this moment would come eventually.

“What part?” I asked gently.

“Everything.”

His voice was quieter now. “The stuff people keep hinting about.”

Conrad leaned forward slightly. “Zane.”

“I’m serious.”

The honesty in Conrad’s response seemed to help. Zane relaxed enough to sit down across from us.

For several seconds nobody spoke. Then Conrad glanced toward me.

We had discussed this possibility before. We just hadn’t expected it to arrive through an anonymous note inside a school

locker.

“The truth is complicated,” I said carefully.

Zane immediately groaned. “Adults always say that.”

“Because it’s usually true,” Conrad replied.

That earned a reluctant smile from him.

I reached across the desk and took Zane’s hand. The action surprised him enough that he stopped trying to joke.

“You deserve answers,” I said. “You and Kyra both do.”

His expression changed immediately. He had expected deflection. Instead, he was getting honesty.

Conrad stood and moved beside me. Together, we spent the next hour discussing the parts of their history that were appropriate for them to know.

We explained that their lives before coming to us had been complicated. We explained that there were people who had protected them and people who had failed them.

Most importantly, we explained that none of it changed who they were now.

“You’re our family,” I said firmly.

Zane stared at the floor for a moment. Then he nodded.

“I know.”

The answer was simple. Somehow it meant everything.

When the conversation ended, we brought Kyra into the room as well. She immediately demanded to know why she had been excluded.

r

“You got a secret meeting without me?” she complained. “That’s rude.”

“We were talking,” Zane said.

“I can talk.”

“Not quietly.”

Kyra gasped dramatically. “That was one time.”

“It was yesterday.”

The argument started instantly, and for the first time since reading the note, I felt myself relax. Some things never changed.

ver the next few days, the incident remained in the back of everyone’s minds, but it stopped dominating the household.

School preparations continued, the baby continued demanding everyone’s attention, and life moved forward.

The newborn had developed a habit of becoming wide awake whenever anyone wanted to sleep. Somehow the baby could detect exhaustion with supernatural accuracy.

One night, Conrad finally fell asleep in a chair while holding a feeding bottle. I took a picture before waking him up.

“You took a picture?” he asked.

“I absolutely did.”

“Delete it.”

“No.”

Kyra immediately asked for a copy. Zane offered to improve the image quality.

The entire conversation ended with Conrad threatening to confiscate everyone’s devices. Nobody took the threat seriously.

Meanwhile, Lyra continued doing exactly what she had been doing for weeks. She helped without asking for recognition and respected every boundary we established.

I noticed it more than I admitted.

One afternoon, she spent almost an hour helping Kyra organize academy supplies. Another day, she distracted the baby long enough for me to take an uninterrupted shower.

Small things. Consistent things. The kind of effort that could not be faked forever. By the end of the week, something had shifted. Not dramatically.

That evening, Lyra prepared to leave after helping with errands. She had almost reached the front door when I spoke.

“Stay for dinner.”

She froze.

Slowly, she turned around. “What?”

I shrugged. “You heard me.”

For a second, genuine surprise crossed her face. Then she smiled.

“Okay.”

The dinner itself was simple. Nobody made a speech about forgiveness or friendship.
