Chapter 39

CONRAD

I was informed of the breach before the sun had fully risen across the inner grounds. The report came from one of my sentinels, and the details were clear enough that I did not need further explanation. A high–ranking wolf had ignored a direct command during a patrol rotation and acted on his own judgment.

That alone was enough.

I stepped out of my quarters without delay, already knowing how this would be handled. Matters like this were not postponed, and they were not discussed behind closed doors. If disobedience was allowed to settle, it would spread, and I did not permit that within my territory.

By the time I reached the central grounds, the formation was already in place.

They stood in ordered lines, their posture aligned, their attention forward. No one spoke. No one moved out of turn. The silence was expected, and it remained unbroken as I took my position at the front.

The wolf in question was already on his knees.

His rank was not low. He had served within my command structure for years, and he had been trusted with responsibilities that required judgment. That made his decision worse, not better.

“You were given a command.”.

“Yes, Alpha King,” he replied.

“And you chose to ignore it.”

There was a brief pause before he answered. “I believed my judgment was correct in the moment.”

I watched him without speaking for a second. “You believed your judgment outweighed mine.”

His shoulders tightened slightly. “No, Alpha King. I acted in the interest of the territory.”

“You acted outside of your authority.”

The distinction was not small.

“I accept my mistake,” he said. “I request the chance to correct it.”

1 stepped closer, stopping just in front of him. “You were not given the authority to make that decision. You were given a role, and you failed to remain within it.”

“Yes, Alpha King.”

There was no resistance in his voice now. There could not be.

“Look at me,”

He raised his head immediately.

“You understand what this means,” I continued.

“I acted against your command. I broke the order within the pack.”

“And the consequence?”

“I accept whatever judgment you give.”

I held his attention for a moment longer, then stepped back.

“Stand,”

He rose without hesitation.

The entire pack remained silent, watching.

“This territory does not function on individual judgment,“, my voice ehoed across the grounds. “It functions on order. When that order is broken, it is corrected immediately.”

No one reacted.

“This is not punishment for failure,” I continued. “This is punishment for disobedience.”

The difference mattered.

I looked at him again. “You will be stripped of your current rank. You will return to basic patrol duties under direct supervision for the next cycle.

His jaw tightened for a second, but he did not argue.

“Yes, Alpha King.”

“You will not make independent decisions until you are given that authority again.”

“Yes, Alpha King.”

“If this happens again, you will not remain in this pack.”

“I understand.”

I held his attention for a moment longer, then gave a short nod. “Return to your position.”

He stepped back into formation without hesitation.

The matter was done.

I turned slightly, scanning the formation, making sure there were no signs of disruption. There were none. They remained as they should be, focused and aligned.

“Resume your duties,”

They moved immediately.

The formation broke in a controlled manner, each wolf returning to their assigned roles without delay. The grounds began to clear, and within moments, the silence returned.

That was when I noticed Amorah standing at the edge of the grounds, her posture still, her attention fixed on ine. She had arrived without announcement, but I had been aware of her presence the moment she stepped within range.

I turned fully toward her.

“You were watching.“.

“Yes,” she replied.

There was no attempt to deny it.

I walked toward her at a measured pace, stopping a short distance away. “You came without being called.”

“I wanted to see how you handle your pack,” she said.

“And now you have.”

She did not respond immediately. Her expression had changed, though not in a way that was easy to define.

“That wasn’t hesitation,” she said after a moment.

“No.”

“You didn’t consider another option.”

“There was no need to.”

She studied me for a second longer. “He wasn’t a low–ranking wolf.”

“I’m aware.”

“And you still removed him from his position without delay.”

“Yes.”

Her brows knitted slightly. “Holmes would have handled that differently.”

“I am not Holmes.”

“That much is clear.”

There was a pause between us.

She looked back toward the grounds, then at me again. “They didn’t question you. Not even for a second.”

“They don’t need to.”

“You don’t leave room for it.”

“I don’t allow it.”

Her gaze remained on me, more direct now. “That’s not just authority. That’s something else.”

I did not answer immediately.

“What have you built here?” she asked.

“A functioning pack.”

“That’s more than that,” she said. “I’ve seen packs. This isn’t the same.”

I stepped closer, closing the distance slightly. “You’re beginning to understand the difference.”

“And you expect me to accept it.

“I expect you to recognize it.”

My wolf stirred beneath the surface.

“Mate.”

That came without warning.

I did not react outwardly, but the presence of it did not fade. It had been there before, quiet, contained, but now it pushed forward with more insistence.

I kept my focus on her.

“You’ve been given a position here,” “You should understand what that means.”

“I didn’t ask for it,” she replied.

“No.“. “But you were given it anyway and you signed up for it.”

Her jaw tightened slightly. “You keep deciding things for me.

“I define what happens within my territory.”

“And I’m just expected to accept that.”

“You’re expected to adapt.”

She looked at me again, her expression firm. “I don’t adapt to things I don’t agree with.”

“You’re still here.”

The words settled between us again.

She exhaled slowly, then shook her head once. “You think that means something more than it does.”

“It means enough.”

There was a brief silence.

“What are you, Conrad?” she asked.

The question was direct

“You’ve seen how this pack operates. You’ve seen how they respond to you. That’s not just Alpha authority.”

I watched her for a moment, then answered.

“I don’t rule one territory“. “I rule several”

Her expression shifted slightly, but she did not interrupt.

“This pack is part of a larger structure.” I continued. “Every territory under my command follows the same order.”

She stared at me, taking that in.

“You’re not just an Alpha,” she said.

“No.”
