I stepped closer, my attention fixed on him in a way that made it clear I was not asking the same question again. The cloth was still in my hand, the scent still fresh, and it kept my focus exactly where it needed to be.

“Where is she taking them,” I asked.

He hesitated, his eyes moving briefly toward Conrad before settling back on me. That hesitation told me he knew more than he wanted to admit.

“You don’t get to think about it,” I said. “You answer.”

“I told you what I know,” he replied quickly.

“That was not enough,” I said.

Conrad stepped forward then, not interrupting, but shifting the balance of the space again. The man’s attention moved to him immediately, and I saw the change in his posture without needing to look for it.

“You will give us everything,” Conrad said.

His tone did not rise.

“I don’t have everything,” the man said, his voice tightening. “I wasn’t meant to be part of the full plan.”

“Then give what you do have,” Conrad replied.

The man swallowed hard, his resistance already thinning.

“There’s another site,” he said.

I did not move, but the words settled heavily.

“Where,” I asked.

“Outside Silvercrest,” he replied. “Far enough that the council has no reach there.”

That explained it.

Bethany had not just prepared for the rite to fail in the chamber. She had prepared to complete it somewhere it could not be questioned or stopped.

“She removed it from council authority,” I said.

“Yes,” he answered.

I looked at Conrad briefly, then back at the man.

“That means no witnesses,” I said.

“No interference,” he added.

“She knew we would come after her,” I said.

“Yes.”

“And she prepared to finish it before we could reach her.”

“Yes.”

That meant one thing.

We were already behind.

Conrad did not repeat my questions.

He shifted slightly, his attention focused in a different way now, not broad, not general, but precise.

“How is the site protected,” he asked.

The man blinked, clearly not expecting the shift.

“There are guards,” he said.

“How many,” Conrad pressed.

“Loyal,” the man answered quickly. “Wolves that answer to her directly.”

Not to Holmes,” said.

“No.”

That confirmed it again. This was not Holmes‘ operation. This was Bethany’s.

“What about the structure,” Conrad asked. “Is it open or enclosed?”

“Enclosed,” the man said. “Built to hold the rite without interruption.”

That meant we would not be able to move in unnoticed.

“There’s only one entrance,” he added.

I looked at him sharply.

“You’re sure,” I asked.

“Yes.”

That made it worse.

One entry point meant one path in and out.

No room for error.

“What about exits,” Conrad asked.

“There are none,” the man replied. “Not for those inside.”

The words settled into place.

Bethany had not just created a location.

She had created a trap.

“She wants us to come,” I said.

“And she wants us to come unprepared,” Conrad added

“Yes.”

“What happens when the rite is completed,” I asked.
