AMORAH
They moved at once.

The outer guards braced, but the impact came hard and direct, forcing them back before they could stabilize their formation. I followed through the opening created, keeping close enough to Conrad’s side to move forward without getting pulled into the clash behind us.
The sounds of the fight stayed at my back, sharp and close, but I did not turn. My focus stayed on the structure, on what waited inside, and on the pull that had been building since we got close.
We entered quickly.
The air inside was different, thicker, carrying the weight of the ritual already underway. It pressed against my senses in a way that made it clear we had stepped into something that was far from the beginning.
I slowed just enough to take it in. The formation was set.
The markings covered the ground in a pattern more refined than the one used in the council chamber, each part placed with intention that spoke of preparation, not improvisation. The energy moved through it in a steady rhythm, already anchored.
My attention moved to the center.
The twins were there.
Restrained within the formation, positioned carefully, their bodies held in place but not completely still. Their heads lifted almost at the same time, awareness clear as they recognized me.
Something tightened in my chest, but I did not let it stop me.
“I’m here,” I called, my voice firm enough to reach them without breaking focus.
Kyra’s expression shifted first, tension easing just enough to show recognition, while Zane leaned forward slightly against the restraint as if testing it. They were alert, not weakened, and that gave me something to hold on to.
“Stay still,” I added.
They did.
Bethany stood just beyond them, centered within the formation, her hands moving with careful precision as she guided the ritual forward. She did not look up immediately, her attention fixed on what she was doing as if nothing else in the room mattered.
This was exactly where she wanted to be.
“She’s deep into it,” I said under my breath.
“Yes,” Conrad replied from just behind me.
His presence was close enough to feel without turning, and it settled something in me even as the tension built. He stepped forward then, not rushing, but with intent that carried through the space and forced attention toward him.
A guard broke away from the fight at the entrance and came straight for me, trying to cut me off before I could reach the

Center. Imoved to meet him, stepping into his path and striking hard enough to stop his advance.
He stumbled back, but not far.
Before he could recover fully, one of Conrad’s wolves intercepted him, pulling the fight away from me and clearing the space again. I did not waste that moment.
I moved forward.
Every step closer made the pull from the ritual stronger, not enough to stop me, but enough to remind me that this was not something simple. The markings reacted to proximity, and I adjusted my path to avoid disrupting them too early.
“You shouldn’t be here,” a voice cut in from the side.
Holmes.
I turned slightly as he approached, his expression tight, his movement quick in a way that felt like he was trying to catch up rather than lead. He looked between Bethany, the twins, and the broken entrance behind us, and the lack of control in his reaction was clear.
“This was not the plan,” he continued.

Bethany did not respond.
She continued the ritual without pause, her focus still fixed on the formation as if his words did not matter. That silence said more than any answer could have.
Holmes looked at her again, then back at me.
“You’ve made this worse,” he added.
I stepped forward, closing more of the distance between myself and the twins.
“This was already worse,” I replied.
He did not answer that.
Because he could not.
Conrad moved past me then, his presence cutting through the space in a way that forced Holmes to step back without thinking. The difference between them was clear in that moment, not just in strength, but in certainty.
“You’re done here,” Conrad said.
Holmes did not argue.
He held his ground for a second, then shifted his attention back toward Bethany, as if looking for direction. That was all I needed to see.
I turned back to the center, my focus narrowing again.
Zane watched me closely, his jaw tight as he tried to push against the restraint holding him. Kyra stayed still, but her eyes darted between me and Bethany.
“What did she tell you,” I asked, keeping my voice low but clear.

Nothing that makes sense, Kyra answered.
“That’s fine.” I said. “You don’t need to understand it right now.”
Zane exhaled hard, his shoulders tensing.
“She said this would fix everything,” he added.
“It won’t,” I replied.
That was the truth.
And they needed to hear it.
Behind them, Bethany finally stopped moving.
The change was subtle at first, her hands slowing before coming to a complete stop as the energy of the ritual continued without her direct input. Then she turned.
Her eyes found mine immediately.
There was no shock in her expression, no sign that she had been caught off guard by our arrival. If anything, there was a quiet certainty in the way she looked at me, as if this moment had always been part of the plan.
“You came,” she said.
I stepped forward another pace, keeping my attention locked on her.
“You didn’t hide this well enough,” I replied.
A small shift passed through her expression, not amusement, not irritation, but something measured.
“I wasn’t trying to hide it,” she said.
That answer settled heavily.
Because it meant exactly what it sounded like.
