Chapter 58
AMORAH
I moved to the twins the moment the last of the ritual energy faded, dropping to their level without thinking about anything else around me. My hands reached for them quickly, checking for injuries, for anything that would tell me how much damage had been done.
Zane reacted first, his arm tightening slightly under my grip as he tried to steady himself. His breathing was uneven, but he was aware, and that alone eased something in my chest.
“I’m fine,” he muttered, though the strain in his voice made it clear he was pushing through more than he wanted to admit.
Kyra leaned forward slightly, one hand pressing against the ground as she tried to regain her balance. Her eyes lifted to mine, sharp and searching, as if she was trying to understand something that had not been clear before.
“We’re not hurt,” she said, though her voice came quieter than usual.
I studied both of them closely, not just their movements, but the way they held themselves. There was something different, not in their bodies, but in the way their presence felt now.
“You feel it too,” I asked, keeping my voice low.
Zane exchanged a brief look with Kyra before answering.
“Yes,” he replied.
That confirmation settled heavily.
It was not something I could see, but it was something I could sense, and it left a quiet unease that I could not ignore.
Conrad stepped closer then, his attention moving between the twins and me with quiet focus. He did not interrupt, but the way he stood made it clear he was watching everything, not just their condition, but the changes beneath it.
“They’re stable,” he noted.
“For now,” I answered, rising slowly to my feet.
My hand brushed lightly against Kyra’s shoulder as I stood, a small gesture meant to reassure, even if I was not fully certain what we were dealing with yet. She did not pull away, which was not what I expected.
Instead, she stayed close.
That alone told me more than anything else.
“We need to leave,” Conrad continued, his tone firm but not rushed.
I nodded without argument.

Bethany leaving that quickly did not mean she had lost, it meant she had already decided the outcome worked for her in some way. Staying here longer would not give us answers, only more risk.
Conrad turned slightly, his attention shifting to his wolves.
“Clear the area,” he ordered. “No one leaves without being accounted for.”

they moved immediately, spreading out through the structure with precise coordination. The remaining guards were already subdued, and the space was secured quickly, but Conrad did not treat it as finished.
I stayed near the twins, my attention still fixed on them as they adjusted to standing on their own again. Zane straightened first, his jaw tightening slightly as he pushed through the lingering strain in his body.
“I can walk,” he said.
“You will,” Conrad replied, stepping closer just enough to make his presence clear. “But you will not push past your limits.”
Zane held his ground for a brief second, then gave a short nod.
Kyra moved next, slower but more measured, her steps careful as she tested her balance. When she reached my side, she did not hesitate before staying there, close enough that I could feel the shift in her breathing.
I glanced down at her briefly.
“You’re alright,” I said.
She nodded, but her attention did not move away from me. That unsettled me more than anything else.
Conrad’s wolves returned quickly, reporting in low, clear tones as they confirmed the area was secure. No sign of Bethany, no sign of Holmes, no immediate threat left behind.
“They’re gone,” one of them confirmed.
“Yes,” Conrad answered.
His expression did not change, but the weight behind that single word was clear. This had not ended, it had only shifted.
“We move,” he added.
The command was followed without delay.
We exited the structure in formation, Conrad’s wolves surrounding us as we moved back across the open ground. The path was cleared ahead of us, their movements precise and efficient, leaving no room for anything unexpected.
I did not look back. There was nothing left there for me. The walk back was quieter than I expected.
The tension from the fight had settled into something heavier, something that stayed beneath the surface instead of breaking through it.

Zane walked at my side, his posture firm despite the strain that still showed in the way his shoulders held. Kyra stayed just behind me, close enough that I could feel her presence without turning.
Neither of them tried to create distance.
That was new.
I glanced toward Conrad briefly, catching the way his attention shifted between us. He noticed it too, the change in their behavior, the way they remained close without hesitation.
“They’re reacting to you,” he said quietly.
“I can tell,” I replied.

“I know.”
That did not make it easier to understand.

We continued in silence for a while, the distance between the ritual site and Conrad’s territory closing steadily. The air changed as we crossed into his land, the shift in presence immediate and unmistakable.
His wolves relaxed slightly, not losing focus, but adjusting as they returned to ground that belonged to them. The tension eased at the edges, but not at the center.
Not where I stood. The twins did not move away. If anything, they drew closer.
Kyra stepped up beside me now, matching my pace without hesitation, while Zane remained on my other side. It was not accidental.
“They’re not pulling away,” I said.
“No,” Conrad replied.
“They should be.”
“They’re not.“.
I exhaled slowly, forcing my thoughts into place.
“This isn’t over,” I said.
“No,” he answered.
That was the truth.
Whatever Bethany had done, it had not ended with the ritual breaking. It had changed something, and that change was still unfolding.
