Chapter 66
AMORAH
The report about Duskveil did not leave my thoughts even after the patrol dismissed. I stood beside Conrad in the strategy room again, watching as new markings were added to the map, each one tightening the structure of his territory.
The room felt more focused than before, not tense, but prepared in a way that made it clear nothing here was left to chance.
Conrad gave his instructions without raising his voice, but every wolf in the room responded with full attention. He did not repeat himself, and he did not need to, because his authority settled the moment he spoke.
I watched the way they moved, how quickly they adapted, and it reinforced something I had already begun to understand about him.
“We limit access to the inner grounds,” he ordered, his gaze moving across the room. “No entry without direct approval, and that includes those who already have clearance.”
One of the senior wolves stepped forward, his posture firm as he waited for clarification.
“And the safe house?” he asked.
“Restricted further,” Conrad replied. “Only assigned guards, no rotation changes without my
command.”
I shifted slightly at that, my attention moving toward him more directly.
“That will isolate them completely,” I pointed out, my tone even as I folded my arms. “Zane is already pushing against confinement.”
Conrad turned toward me, not dismissing the concern, but weighing it before responding.
“He can push,” he answered. “He will not leave.”
The certainty in his voice settled the matter, even if I did not fully like it. I understood the reasoning behind it, and more importantly, I trusted that he was not making the decision without cause.
“They need to stay safe,” I replied after a moment, letting my arms drop to my sides. “Even if they don’t agree with how it’s done.”
“They will,” he returned, his tone calm. “Because they have no other option.”
The conversation ended there, not because there was nothing more to say, but because the decision had already been made. The wolves moved out again, carrying out his orders without hesitation, leaving the two of us alone in the room once more.
The silence that followed was different this time. It was not filled with strategy or urgency, but with something quieter that had been building over the past few days.
“You’ve been watching me,” Conrad noted.
I did not deny it, and I did not step back.
“I have,” I replied, keeping my tone direct. “Because something is not adding up.”
His expression did not shift much, but his attention settled more firmly on me.
“And what exactly are you seeing?” he asked.

“You don’t hesitate,” I began, my eyes fixed on his. “You don’t second–guess your decisions, and you don’t lose focus when things escalate.“
He listened without interrupting, which only made it easier to continue.
“But after certain moments.” I added, letting the words settle for a second, “you pause.”
A brief silence followed before he responded.
“That is not unusual,” he replied.
“It is for you,” I retorted, my tone firm but not confrontational. “And it only happens when it involves me.”
That was the point where the conversation shifted.
He did not respond immediately, and that alone told me I was not wrong. I held my position, waiting, not pushing further but not stepping away either.
“Then ask what you are trying to ask,” he said finally.
I drew in a quiet breath before speaking again, choosing my words carefully.
“Why me?” I asked.

“You chose me,” I finished. “So I w readable, but there was a shift beneath it that I could not ignore.
to know why.”
The silence stretched for a moment, not uncomfortable, but deliberate. When he finally spoke, his voice remained calm, but there was something more grounded beneath it.
“It was not random,” he answered.
did not move, letting that settle before responding.
“That much is clear,” I replied. “But that is not an answer.”
His jaw tightened slightly, just enough to notice, before he continued.
“My bloodline is not stable,” he said.
The words were direct, without hesitation, and they carried weight without needing emphasis.
“It has not been for some time,” he added. “And it requires a specific match to correct that.”
Theld his gaze, processing what he had just said without reacting too quickly.
“And I am that match?” I asked.
He did not look away.

The room felt quieter after that, even though nothing had changed. I took a step back, not out of discomfort, but to give myself space to think through what he had revealed.
“So this was always strategy,” I said, my tone calm.
“It started that way,” he replied.
“And now?” I pressed.
He did not answer immediately, and for the first time, I saw hesitation that was not tied to uncertainty, but to choice.
“Now it is not only that,” he said.
That was all he gave me.
I stood there for a moment. It was not a full answer, but it was enough to change how I understood everything that had happened between us.
“You could have told me,” I said after a moment.
소
“You would not have agreed,” he replied.
I let out a quiet breath, knowing he was not
