Chapter 73

AMORAH

I returned to my quarters after the strategy session, closing the door behind me with more care than usual as the silence settled in. The space felt familiar, but something about it had changed, and I could not ignore the difference no matter how much I tried to focus on something else.

I moved toward the table, picking up the reports that had been left for me, but the words did not hold my attention the they should have.

I sat down, placing the papers in front of me, and forced myself to read through the updates from the outer patrols. The details were clear, movement tracked, positions confirmed, and nothing suggested immediate danger within Conrad’s territory.

Still, my thoughts kept drifting back to the earlier moment, to the way he had stood close without stepping away, and how I had not moved either.

I exhaled slowly, setting the report down as I leaned back in the chair. This was not a distraction from weakness, it was something else that I had not fully decided how to handle. The line between what was necessary and what was personal had become harder to separate, and I knew that ignoring it would not make it disappear.

A knock came at the door, firm but not forceful, pulling me out of my thoughts. I straightened slightly, my attention returning to the present as I responded. Come in,” I called, my voice steady as I pushed the reports aside.

The door opened, and Conrad stepped inside, closing it behind him without hesitation. He did not move further right away. his

gaze settling on me.

I need your input on the movement toward Obsidian Hollow,he began, his tone direct and focused.

I nodded, rising from my seat as I stepped closer to the table again. What has changed,I asked, my attention shifting fully to the discussion.

He moved toward me then, placing a map beside the reports I had been reading earlier. Additional routes have been confirmed,he replied, his hand resting briefly on one of the marked paths. They are not all being used yet, but they are being prepared.”

I leaned in slightly, studying the markings as I traced one of the outer lines with my finger. She is spreading the movement,” I said, my tone thoughtful as I followed the path. If one roule is blocked, the others remain open

That is the intention,” he answered, his voice close enough now that I could feel the proximity withqut looking at him directly.

I shifted slightly, aware of how close he had moved, and how little space remained between us. Then we do not focus on one point,I continued. We divide attention without losing strength.

He did not respond immediately, and when I glanced up, I found his gaze already on me. There was a pause that lasted longer than necessary, and I could feel the shift between us again, quiet but impossible to ignore.

You are right,he said finally, though his voice had lowered slightly. We adjust without spreading too thin

I nodded, but I did not step back, and neither did he

We will need to move before those routes are fully active,I added, though my voice had softened without intention: We will,he replied, his gaze not leaving mine.

The conversation should have continued, but it did not, not in the way it started.

You did not have to come here for this,” I said after a moment, my tone quieter now.

I know,he answered, not looking away.

You still came,I replied.

He stepped closer, closing the space between us without hesitation. I did,he said, his voice low but clear.

I did not move back, and I did not stop him. The space between us disappeared, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. both aware of what we were choosing without needing to explain it

My hand rested against the edge of the table, but it did not stay there for long. I turned slightly toward him, my attention no longer divided, and this time, I did not pretend it was anything else.

He reached for me without hesitation, his hand finding mine before sliding upward, drawing me closer sweetly. I responded without resistance, closing the distance fully.

I just wanted to kiss you,” Conrad confessed and I found that cute and sexy.

A part of my brain wasn’t thinking anymore as he pressed his lips against mine and I kissed him back too. Admittedly. I loved every second of it and my wolf loved it more. It was almost as if she was clinging onto him. More to his wolf

This does not change the agreement,” I said shyly.

He did not react immediately, his attention still fixed on me as if weighing the words before responding. No,he replied after a moment. It does not,he agreed.

I held his gaze for a second longer, searching for something more, but he did not add to it, and I did not push. The words were enough to define the space again, even if they did not fully reflect what had just happened.

Then we continue as planned,I said, turning slightly as I reached for the map again.

We do,he answered, though he did not move away right away.

The silence returned, but it was different now, carrying weight that neither of us addressed. After a moment, he stepped back, giving space again, but the distance felt thinner than before.

I will update the patrols,he said, his tone returning to the same level it had been before.

I will review the routes again,I replied, keeping my focus on the map even as I remained aware of Lim

He did not leave immediately, and for a moment, I thought he might say something more. Instead, he turned and moved toward the door, opening it without hesitation,

We will move soon,he added before stepping out.

I nodded, though he did not see it, and the door closed behind him. I stood there for a moment, my hand still resting of the table as I let the silence settle again.

Before I could return to the reports, a sharp knock broke through the silence, more urgent this time. I straightened immediately, my focus returning as I moved toward the door and opened it.

One of Conrad’s wolves stood there, his posture tight as he delivered the message without delay. Report from the safe house,he began, his tone serious.
