The room stayed silent after the intelligence wolf delivered the report about Holmes and Bethany meeting again.

I watched Amorah carefully from the corner of my eye and noticed the change

in her expression immediately.

She was no longer reacting like someone caught inside another person’s plans. She was already thinking ahead.

“Where did the meeting happen?” I asked.

The wolf straightened slightly. “An abandoned border estate near the western crossing.”

“Who attended besides them?”

“We confirmed Holmes, Bethany, and two representatives connected to the Varken family.”

Amorah’s jaw tightened beside me. “So they are no longer hiding the alliance.”

“No,” I answered quietly. “Which means they believe they are close enough to act openly.”

The wolf placed several documents on the table before stepping back. “There is more.”

I picked up the top report while listening carefully.

“Holmes has started moving wolves toward neutral council territory,” he continued. “Officially, he claims it is additional protection for the succession hearing.”

Amorah folded her arms slowly. “And unofficially?”

The wolf hesitated briefly. “It looks like preparation for conflict.”

I dismissed him after collecting the remaining reports. The door closed behind him, leaving only silence inside the roomy. again.

Amorah leaned against the edge of the table while staring down at the documents. “He is preparing for the possibility that the hearing fails.”

“Yes.”

“And Bethany is helping him.”

I looked toward her directly. “Bethany does not care about council law. She cares about power”

Amorah remained quiet for several seconds before speaking again. “Then we stop both of them before they force this inso

open war.”

The certainty in her voice pulled my attention immediately. Months ago, she would have focused only on survival

Now she sounded like someone already preparing to protect territory, family, and future all at once.

“You are angry.” I observed.

4 at dud, she corrected. “There is a difference”

I moved closer until I stood directly in front of her. “You need rest.”

“And you need to stop saying that every five minutes”

Despite the tension sitting between us, the answer almost pulled a smile from me. Amorah noticed immediately.

“You almost smiled again,” she muttered suspiciously,

“I did not.”

“You definitely did.”

Before I could answer, another wave of exhaustion hit her visibly. Her shoulders lowered slightly, and she pressed one hand against the table,

I reached for her waist automatically. “Enough reports for tonight.”

“I can still work.”

“You can barely stay standing”

She looked irritated by how quickly I noticed. “I hate that everyone suddenly treats me carefully.”

“You are carrying my child,” I replied calmly. “Nobody is going to ignore that.”

Her expression softened slightly after that. I guided her toward the private sitting area without resistance this time.

The twins were already there when we entered. Kyra sat curled beneath a blanket while watching something on television, while Zane argued with one of the guards over training schedules for the following morning.

“I should be training with the older wolves already,” Zane complained.

The guard looked exhausted. “You are twelve.”

“I am not weak.”

“No one said you were weak”

Kyra noticed us first and immediately muted the television. “You both look stressed again.”

“That is because they are old,” Zane replied before anyone else could answer.

Amorah laughed softly under her breath while sitting carefully beside Kyra. I stayed standing nearby while watching them quietly.

The scene affected me more than 1 wanted to admit.

Kyra leaned gently against Amorah’s side without hesitation now. Zane still pretended distance mattered, but he watched Amorah constantly whenever she left a room.

Neither child treated her like an outsider anymore.

Ainorah looked toward Zane after a moment. “Did you finish the tactical exercises Darius gave you?”

He looked annoyed immediately. “I was about to”

“You said that yesterday too.”

“That sounds familiar,” I muttered.

She shot me a glare instantly while Kyra laughed openly. Even Zane looked like he was fighting amusement.

For a brief moment, the territory, the council, and the coming conflict felt far away.

Later that night, after the twins returned to their guarded rooms, Amorah and I remained alone inside the private quarters Rain pressed softly against the windows while dim lights filled the room.

She sat beside me on the couch with another intelligence file resting across her lap. I reached over and closed it gently.

“You are impossible,” she murmured.

“You are exhausted.”

“I am starting to think you enjoy repeating that sentence.”

“I enjoy being correct.”

She rolled her eyes before leaning back against the couch. A few seconds later, she shifted closer without seeming to notice she was doing it.

I rested one arm around her automatically.

“This feels too normal sometimes,” she admitted quietly.

I looked down at her carefully. “Does that bother you?”

“A little.”

“Why?”

Her fingers tightened slightly against the blanket covering her legs. “Because I was never supposed to become attached to any of this.”

I brushed my hand slowly against her stomach before answering honestly. “Neither was I.”

She lifted her head slightly to study my face. “You really did not expect any of this, did you?”

“No.”

“And now?”
