Chapter 97

Amorah POV

The conversation outside the meeting chamber stayed in my head long after the council wolves walked away.

“They were loud enough for the entire floor to hear them,” I muttered.

Conrad’s jaw tightened slightly as he looked down the hallway. “They wanted you to hear it.”

I turned toward him slowly. “Can they actually force something like that?”

“They can try,” he answered. “But the council only gains power when people allow fear to control the situation.”

I watched him carefully for a moment before speaking again. “You already knew this might happen, didn’t you?”

Conrad exhaled quietly and rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. “I knew Holmes would look for another angle once the emergency vote started losing support.”

The frustration inside me sharpened immediately. “So now they want to question whether your child is really yours just to weaken you politically.”

“They want instability,” Conrad replied. “If they cannot remove me directly, they will attack the heir.”

I looked away from him before my anger pushed me into saying something reckless. The hallway around us remained busy with passing wolves, but nobody came close enough to interrupt the tension sitting between us.

“I am getting tired of people treating this child like territory to conquer,” I admitted quietly.

Conrad’s expression changed immediately after hearing that. He stepped closer to me carefully, keeping his voice lower this

time.

“You are not alone in this anymore, Amorah,” he told me.

“And neither is our child.”

I lowered my eyes briefly before answering him. “Then stop carrying everything like you still have to protect all of us by yourself.”

Conrad studied my face silently for several seconds before giving a small nod. “I am trying.”

We returned to his private quarters shortly afterward, and for once neither of us rushed back into council strategy immediately. The pressure from the hearing still sat heavily over the territory, but exhaustion bad fially started catching up

to both of us.

Kyra sat curled up on the couch reading one of her lesson books when we entered. Zane looked up from the floor where he had been sorting training knives under supervision from one of Conrad’s guards.

Kyra’s face brightened immediately when she noticed us together. “Did the meeting finally end“”

“For tonight,” I answered as I walked further into the room.

Zane narrowed his eyes slightly. “You both look irritated.”

Conrad removed his jacket slowly before sitting beside Kyra. That is because council wolves enjoy talking too much.

Kyra laughed quietly at that while Zane snorted under his breath. The normal rewton from them cased some of the pressure sitting inside me almost immediately

moved toward the table near the windows and reached for the water pitcher carefully. Before I could pour anything. Conrad appeared beside me and took the glass from my hand first.

“You have barely eaten since morning,” he pointed out.

“I was busy”

“You are still busy” he replied. “That does not change the fact that you need to eat.”

Zane looked between both of us with obvious annoyance, “You two argue like old people”

Kyra immediately shook her head, “No, they argue like mates”

The silence afterward lasted exactly three seconds before Zane groaned loudly, Conrad actually looked armused for the first time all evening, which only made Kyra smile wider.

“You are both impossible,” I muttered.

Kyra grinned at me openly. “You did not deny it.”

Conrad glanced toward me briefly after that, and the look in his eyes affected me more than I wanted to admit. There was nothing tense or uncertain left inside moments like these anymore.

Later that night, the twins finally returned to their rooms under guard while Conrad and I stayed inside the main sitting area reviewing council reports together. I sat sideways against the couch while Conrad remained beside me reading through intelligence updates from nearby territories.

“The western faction still has not committed publicly,” I noted while scanning one document. “That means Holmes has not secured enough votes yet.”

“He is trying to pressure undecided territories into moving quickly,” Conrad replied.

I lowered the papers slightly. “Do you think the public examination threat is real?”

Conrad leaned back against the couch slowly before answering. “Holmes will push for it if he believes it can damage support around us.

The irritation returned immediately, “It is humiliating.”

“I know.”

I looked toward him carefully, “Does it bother you?”

His expression hardened slightly after the question, “The idea that anyone thinks they have the right to question you or this child bothers me more than you realize”

The honesty in his voice pulled the tension out of me faster than I expected.

Conrad set the reports aside before turning toward me fully. “You should sleep”
