The bar grew steadily louder. Zane's voice was low, and Elara found herself leaning in even closer to catch his words.
"The preliminary feasibility assessments are already done. Between the policy incentives and the state-backed management, your stagnant properties can easily be revitalized as long as their locations aren't terrible."
"How is a project this massive completely off the radar?" Elara pressed.
"It hasn't been officially announced yet. There are countless companies on the verge of bankruptcy waiting for a lifeline, but the project only needs so much housing. The wolves outnumber the meat."
"If Quentin Quigley hadn't crashed and burned, we never would have gotten this opportunity."
As Zane spoke, he reached for the drinks on the table. The two glasses were identical. He purposefully picked up hers, his eyes lingering on the red imprint of her lipstick before pressing his mouth exactly where hers had been and taking a sip.
In the dim lighting, Elara was far too focused on the business proposal to notice the switch.
Seeing him drink, she quickly grabbed the remaining glass and took a sip, briefly wondering why it felt lighter than before.
But the business details were too important for her to care about minor discrepancies.
Watching her drink from his glass, Zane's Adam's apple bobbed. A dark, subtle smile curved his lips as he tilted the glass back, draining the rest of the liquor.
"Hey, take it easy. Don't drink too much," Elara warned, afraid he might get too drunk to finish explaining the deal.
Zane chuckled softly. "I'm not worried about getting drunk, because I trust you."
Elara glanced at his sharp, handsome profile and smiled. "I think that's supposed to be my line."
Zane laughed openly. "Do you want to know how Mr. Quigley lost this golden opportunity?"
Elara hadn't cared before, but now she was fully invested. "Tell me. I need to know what mistakes to avoid."
Zane paused, a sudden smirk breaking across his face. "I think you'd have a very hard time making this particular mistake."
"I'm all ears."
