Elara needed to swing by the office to grab some files before heading to the courthouse.
Zane insisted on driving her. The entire ride, he relentlessly reminded her not to let her sympathy get the better of her, and absolutely not to fall for a man's silver-tongued lies.
"Whatever you do, don't drag this out with him. It's just a waste of your life. As long as he agrees to sign the papers, let it go."
"I want the capital I brought into the marriage back," Elara stated flatly.
At this point, Zane just wanted to throw money at the problem to make it disappear. "As long as he divorces you, I'll reimburse whatever amount it is."
Elara frowned. "Do you even know how much money that is?"
"Of course I know." Zane casually gestured a number with his fingers. After she had married Julian, Zane had completely lost hope and agreed to marry Jocelyn Yale. So, naturally, he knew exactly how massive the Vance family's nest egg had been.
"I can easily cover that," Zane assured her. "Give me a little time to liquidate some assets, and I'll transfer the full amount into your name within a month."
Elara shot him an exasperated glare, silently calling him an idiot.
A wide grin spread across his face. He gently took her hand and brought it to his lips for a soft kiss. "Every cent I own will be transferred to you in a pre-nup before we marry."
"You don't need to bring a single dime of that settlement into the Whitaker family. What's yours is yours. You can use it entirely to bail out the Vance family."
"You don't even need to worry about bringing a dowry. I'll provide one for you."
"If you divorce him today, I'll marry you tomorrow."
Elara forced down the turbulent emotions surging in her chest and firmly pulled her hand back. "Focus on driving."
Zane glanced at her, smiling but staying silent.
Elara cleared her throat. "That night at The Regency Club, I manipulated him into signing a loan agreement. The contract was drafted by a top-tier legal team, so one way or another, I am getting that money back."
Zane looked momentarily surprised.
"I'm not exactly a saint of a woman," Elara pointed out. "You should think things through before you make promises."
Zane laughed. "Jasper told me I'm under your love spell. If I stop loving you, I'll drop dead."
Elara was speechless.
"So, if you want that money back, I'll fight Julian Sterling to the bitter end and get it for you," Zane said. "But if you want to cut the knot quickly, we can just let the bastard keep it and wipe our hands clean of him."
Elara had no intention of dragging Zane into this mess. "I can handle a simple divorce. Under no circumstances are you to show your face."
