"Who knows if he'd try to sweet-talk you into staying," Zane muttered, sounding almost pitiful.
"The fact that I didn't murder him on the spot is already a miracle," Elara shot back, yanking her hand away to aggressively wipe the last traces of her lipstick from his mouth. "And you, stop slacking off all day."
Zane didn't care in the slightest. "My mom explicitly told me that my absolute biggest priority right now is securing a wife. She's terrified I'm going to die a bachelor."
Thinking about how many years he had spent alone, Elara's heart instantly softened, and the aggressive scrubbing turned into a gentle swipe.
"Even so, you can't act like this. You look like a man whose soul got sucked out by a seductress."
Zane laughed. "I already told you, I'm under a love spell. If I stop loving you, I'll literally die."
"Stop being so glib. Let's go before someone sees us."
Zane leaned over to buckle her seatbelt before finally pulling the car into traffic.
"So, walk me through the hearing?"
"Nothing much to tell. Mediation failed, so now we wait for the final ruling," Elara said, pulling down the visor to fix her lipstick. "But my lawyer said the judge almost certainly won't grant the divorce immediately. They'll issue a mandatory six-month separation mandate."
These were technicalities Zane had researched long ago; he had it all calculated in his mind. "Unless it's an official court summons, do not say a single word to him for the next six months. Do not give him an inch to exploit."
"You're overthinking it. The only thing left between us is money. Nothing else."
"Whatever happens, you have to take responsibility for me."
Elara: "..."
-
Zane drove the car straight to the hospital and undid her seatbelt.
Elara refused to move. "I have a meeting. We can do this when I have free time."
Zane walked around to open her door. "Hurry up, I have a meeting too."
Elara hesitated. "It'll be incredibly fast," Zane pushed. "Everything is completely arranged. We just go in, draw the blood, and leave."
This was an elite private hospital, and Zane had pulled strings well in advance.
"What exactly did you arrange?"
"A blood test is the only definitive proof," Zane explained.
