Elara gripped the handle above the door. "Mr. Whitaker, I am perfectly capable of taking a cab to the office."
"Nonsense. It's completely on my way."
Elara stared at him in disbelief. On his way? He was literally driving twenty minutes in the opposite direction.
"You're driving like a maniac, but you claim you're not busy?"
"I'm really not," Zane insisted effortlessly.
"You are so full of it."
Zane flashed a dazzling grin. "I wasn't busy. But since I'm dragging myself to Eastford with you this afternoon, I have to cram four hours of meetings into one, and sign off on a mountain of contracts before noon."
Elara sighed. "..."
"If we ever have a son, I swear to God, he better not inherit your personality."
Zane looked instantly offended. "Why would we have a son? We're having a daughter!"
Elara swallowed hard, looking out the window.
Honestly, at this point, boy or girl, she just prayed she could give him a child at all.

The absolute second Zane marched into Whitaker Group headquarters, he turned the executive floor into a war zone.
He was barking orders, demanding endless files, and driving Jasper Yale to the brink of insanity.
"Is a meteor hitting the earth at 1:00 PM?!"
"Why the hell does everything have to be finalized this exact second?!"
"You just scribble your name and look cool, but I have to do all the actual legwork to draft these contracts!"
Zane didn't even look up from his paperwork. "The world isn't ending, but I'm out of the office this afternoon."
Jasper looked like he was going to blow a gasket. "Where are you going now?!"
"Eastford. Business trip."
"The Whitaker Group doesn't have any pending acquisitions in Eastford!" Jasper yelled.
"The Whitaker Group doesn't, but I do."
"You don't get to run off on personal errands! You haven't even officially married into her family yet!"
"Shut it! Do you still want to marry into mine?"
"You always use Seraphina to blackmail me!"
