Vanessa thought she had completely seen through Elara's motives. "You're just terrified I'm actually going to have this baby, aren't you?"
"You want to get back together with him, but you don't want my child in the picture. You act so high and mighty, but you're just a pathetic loser begging for a man's forgiveness!"
"You're relying on a man just as much as I am! What makes you any different from me?!"
"What makes me different?" Elara slapped her hard across the face, then delivered a brutal backhand before staring her down with glacial intensity. "Do you see the difference now?"
"Even if you're carrying his kid, I'll still smack you. Dare to lay a finger on me and see what happens."
Vanessa clutched her stinging cheek, genuinely too terrified to strike back. She shot Elara a venomous glare. "You only know how to bully the defenseless!"
Elara scoffed contemptuously. "Get the hell out."
Elara actually had no idea about Julian's low sperm count. She had just thrown that comment out to make Vanessa believe the baby was her golden ticket, ensuring she would cling to Julian for dear life.
But her offhand remark made Vanessa take it as absolute gospel.
Because Julian and his wife genuinely hadn't conceived in years.
She figured Elara wanted to reconcile but couldn't stomach the idea of Vanessa having the child, which was why she was pushing for an abortion.
She wanted her marriage back without Julian having an heir, yet this baby was critically important to Julian, as it could very well be his only offspring.
So, Vanessa knew she absolutely could not afford to screw this up.
She realized she stood to gain a lot more than she thought.
If only this baby was actually Julian's.
Then she could confidently demand a DNA test and force him into marriage.
Unfortunately, this entire pregnancy was an elaborate con she had orchestrated herself.
