Julian didn't find out until the next day.
He called Elara in an absolute panic. "You never dropped the lawsuit!"
Elara replied coolly. "Drop what lawsuit? If you wire the remaining balance right now, you might still make it in time."
"I already told you, I can't move that kind of capital. My father will notice immediately."
"You're so terrified of your family finding out now, but where was that fear when you were out screwing around behind my back?"
"It was a momentary lapse in judgment."
"Oh, don't say that. Think of how brokenhearted your little mistress would be to hear that."
"Elara, just give me a little more time. Go withdraw the lawsuit, please."
Elara was utterly unmoved. "I've given you more than enough time. You just refuse to pay and want to drag this out indefinitely. You reap what you sow. This is on you."
"If you do this, my parents are going to find out about the stupid mistake I made."
"What stupid mistake? That money was my dowry to begin with," Elara snapped. "The Sterlings parade around as an elite family, but you can't even stomach returning a woman's dowry?"
"I already gave you half! Just give me some time for the rest."
"No. I'll see you in court."
After experiencing what he considered to be a flawless afternoon of intimacy, Zane finally had undeniable proof that the old doctor was right. He wasn't broken.
That massive weight that had been crushing his chest for years completely vanished, leaving him feeling lighter than air.
So after dropping Elara off at her office, he skipped returning to Whitaker Corporation and went straight to The Whitaker Manor to visit his mother.
That was when he discovered Julian was frantically begging everyone in their circle for cash.
The reason he knew was because Beatrice Prescott was visiting his mother, and Xavier had come to pick her up. Right then, Xavier received a desperate phone call from Julian.
"Xavier, are you with Zane?" Julian's voice filtered through the line.
"I'm at The Whitaker Manor picking up my wife," Xavier replied.
Zane was in a phenomenally good mood today. He chuckled and called out loudly, "Julian! I've got some spare cash lying around. If you can't scrape enough together, I'll happily cover the shortfall for you!"
Julian's eyes narrowed. He and Zane weren't nearly close enough to borrow money from each other. He instantly realized Zane was mocking him.
